Always wondered this, why are they called parishes instead of counties? French thing?

i think its a frenchie thing.
You will also find that especially in acadiana, a lot of property will be described using arpents instead of acres and square feet. Very annoying stuff.

Louisiana is all backwards bc it was a French Colony

I've never heard of arpents before.

I hadn't either until I credited a guy for having way too much land because of thinking the survey was recorded using acres.
Almost fricked up big time on that one but luckily we caught it before anyone outside the office saw the report.

seriously that was pretty good.
OP, its a cultural thing. Something Ar-Kansas would never understand.

How does the school system work there?
Is each Parish School board in charge of a school "district?"
I ask because i have some possible business with Calcasieu, Ibera, and Saint Martin Parish School boards in the works.

Yes. you have that correct.
I see why you don't have business in Texas though. Nobody goes to school by the looks of the map in that other thread.

Each parish has a superintendent and school board. I am not a fan of this system. There are too many schools in each the more populated districts, and very little consistency among them. Individual principals & schools kind of do their own thing.

that's kinda how i saw it. interesting. so does the superintendent report to the parish itself or just the parish school board?

good choice not working with EBR school board. Also i believe it is slightly different in EBR because central and zachary are break away districts inside the parish and I don't think they answer to the tards at EBRSB. The non incorporated part of Baton Rouge is trying to break away into its own town partly over the school system here. Im looking forward to the day when the tanks are rolling down the street as the great br civil war begins. Im make a push that we claim downtown br as part of new St. George.
Also the Parishes have to do with our french/ catholic heritage. I kinda like the slight difference

It's a French, Spanish, Catholic thing. Local government was established as whatever church parish it was in & it just stuck.
Alaska doesn't use "county" either, they have boroughs
