Listening to CM on Finebaum right now trying to spin the retention of Grant in the face of Auburn hiring Pearl reminds me of Dye on Fbaum saying he would choose Gene Chizik over Nick Saban right before Auburn was physically assaulted in the Iron Bowl.

I actually feel bad for Grant because he is a great guy, probably a good coach, who took the wrong job but right now CM is trying to put lipstick on a pig

Paul Finebaum @finebaum
End of the world as we know it ... @JimTusca blasts Bama keeping Grant, praises Pearl hire and ends call, "War Eagle!"

It was sad listening to him try to rationalize why keeping Grant was a good idea. It's because he's a good guy.

Jim from Tuscaloosa. One of Finebaum's regular callers.

I agree with everything you said except,

who took the wrong job

How is it the job's fault?

Not anyone's fault, just an unfortunate outcome. Sometimes people can bounce back from these types of things. VCU has become a powerhouse and Grant laid the foundation for that. He can either turn things around at Alabama or rebuild hi reputation elsewhere.

I think that had more to do with Shakka than Grant...

I've always theorized that Grant's coaching style isn't conducive to success with the type of AAU high profile athletes he's been recruiting to UA. NBA "prospects" don't want to be brow beaten by a drill sergeant. The kids at VCU responded better to that style of coaching, but SEC caliber talent doesn't want to hear that shite...He needs to change his coaching style or change the type of player he's recruiting because they don't work..JMO.

Can VCU-type players win in the SEC?

The Alabama job is a good one. It's perplexing why he's failed so miserably. Even with a horrid offense, there's no reason to be 13-19.

Not just the Alabama job, I think Anderson, Cunzo, and hell even Barbee to a certain extent were decent coaches it's just something about the SEC? I dunno???

To be where Alabama basketball is right now is depressing. It is a job with some very good history, when not comparing it to Kentucky. Mark Gottfried had some moments but that had eroded away by the time Grant showed up. AG brought some excitement those first two years and butts were in the seats. And then bam. The bottom slowly started to rust out and then fell through this season.

CM Newton doesn't give a rats arse about whether Alabama wins. He cares about himself and circle of people he deals with on a daily basis. Its not like it makes his day when Alabama wins a big basketball game.
