You're an athletic director, what do you look for in a football coach to hire?

My checklist would look something like this:

- comes from a defensive background, but has had a lot of success with offense
- builds his team from the lines out
- is the current head coach in a major BCS conference
- is a cool coach that players gravitate towards
- has proven to be able to sustain success
- has been the head coach in one or more BCS bowl games
- has proven to hire solid assistant coaches
- recruits high character, classy prospects
- has a good looking wife that proves the man can recruit
- puts his players safety first

Kevin Sumlin played linebacker at Purdue...3rd all time in tackles still.

2 top 5 OL NFL draft picks, going on 5 or 6

Check

- has proven to be able to sustain success

1 losing season in 6 years of coaching due to injury.

quote:

- has been the head coach in one or more BCS bowl games

If CUSA was only as weak as the Big 10

quote:

has proven to hire solid assistant coaches

4 assistants are now head coaches, one current assistant used to be a head coach

quote:

- recruits high character, classy prospects

That's code for "2 and 3 star players no one else wants"...no thanks.

quote:

has a good looking wife that proves the man can recruit

Charlene Sumlin is older than Kevin by 3 years and isn't bad looking herself

quote:

puts his players safety first

Hence proper conditioning instead of trying to change the rules.

One who wouldn't cost me my job or force me to hire a replacement 3-5 years later.

Why is that preferable to someone that has an offensive background, but success with defense?

Most offensive guru's have CUSA/WAC level defenses where ever they go.

Most defensive guru's have an offense that aids in their teams ability to win games.

I would use the James Franklin approach, "Show me a picture of your wife."

Also it would depend on the sport I'm hiring.

Football/Men's basketball, Track, best proven winner possible.

I would try out my "eye for talent" with secondary sports no one gives a shite about like Baseball, Women's Basketball, Tennis, etc.

I'd prolly have a team of people doing that for me and making recommendations.

Personally? I'd want a top notch resume but also a candidate who could put together a top tier coaching staff - meaning lots of connections.

no that's code for you can have all the stars in the world but if they're constantly getting in trouble and not playing then their effect is null and void

I wouldn't hire Sumlin, he is the 4th best HC in Texas now that Brown is gone, while being paid 1st best money.
