Big fan of whiskey (Bourbon, Scotch, Tennessee sippin'), but never really tried rum. I don't count 'Bahama Mamas' on a cruise I had once.

So, anyway, I'm not that big a fan of mixed drinks and would rather drink it neat or not at all.

Should I just skip it or is there some good rum to be had that you can drink neat?

School me on some rum please.

Dark rum is the only rum you need to drink.

I like Kraken and Sailor Jerry neat, or maybe with just a squeeze of lime or some bitters. I never used to be into rum until I bought a handle of Jerry about six months ago.

The first real advice in this thread. Much obliged my Tide friend.

I like drinking Bourbon and Scotch neat and have no real interest in mixing drinks. I just want to pour and sip.

Wasn't sure if rum is the drink for that or not.

My two knee surgeries are saying F-rum with you. Haven't had any liquor make my joints hurt yet, though.

If I drink rum a night out, my right thumb big joint (which I dislocated many times) and my left ankle will hurt like a bitch the next day.

I'm becoming and old, old man.

Buy a Bacardi Anejo (aged) rum and drink it neat. If that is not too objectionable, then get back to me for some pricier/tastier options. And for God's sake, please ignore any suggestions to try a spiced rum. That's just how they disguise bad rum...

I used to exclusively drink whiskey until last fall. Friend got a me a fifth of Jerry's and I've been hooked ever since.

Alright - I took your advice and am currently sipping on a glass of Bacardi Anejo neat.

I like it. I thought it would have more flavor to it, but it's my first neat glass of rum, so what do I know?

Anyway, I think I might like rum quite a bit based on this first attempt. It's quite a bit smoother than Bourbon and even Scotch and I think I will like the sugarcane/molasses profile.

So - suggestions? And I don't need hip or flavor of the month suggestions or the latest rum fad that costs more than it's worth. Give me some solid suggestions of good rum at a reasonable price based on quality and I shall have at it.

Understand I am a complete rum noob, so forgive any ignorance please.

P.S. - I am willing to pay more for it if it is worth it. I'm just not sure what's worth it yet and would like to learn from those who have been there to avoid as many rum buying mistakes as possible.

Sailor Jerry is good, but I prefer Captain Morgan 100-proof. It's much better than the regular 80-proof stuff. I just shoot and chase with Coke Zero.

If you can find it, Mount Gay rum is very smooth. It is made in Barbados and I had it there last summer for the first time. Brought several bottles home.

Dude, rum is good and anyone who tells you anything other than that is trying to be something they're not.

I'd put it in the same category as vodka, but if you're a whiskey sipper trying to pretend you're cool for not drinking clear liqour, avoid it like you should.

Otherwise, just enjoy yet another liquor that can get you fricked up and also be mixed with liquids that will help you enjoy drinking more.

Depressed/mad? Dark liquor
Okay/happy? Clear

It's a real rule.
