Is there one??

I know about the Sweetwater and the Terrapin. I've seen their tie-dyed mini-vans and their lame neo-hippie 420 wink, wink marketing gimmicks. But, are there other homegrown breweries in Georgia that I am not aware of?

I'm not a beer snob, but I was in North Carolina recently and was blown away by all the local NC beers available. And I like the idea of supporting quality products from home like they do up there.

Side-Note: There appears to be a wide-open market in this state for this trend. Fertile ground for an ambitious young Chowderpop looking for small business opportunity. Sky's the Limit.

Until somebody comes up with something better than Stella or Coors Light, I'm out of the beer tasting game.

Creature Comforts brewing just opened in the Snow Tire building in Athens, the place with the turd-monster you make fun of.

These guys are opening up in downtown Athens. No clue on how good their product will be, but if their good they will be extremely successful due to location.

False.

GA has a 3-tiered distribution system that says you can sell beer in stores OR sell beer in your restaurant/bar. You can't do both. It's why you can't buy Copper Creek beer in a store, because they sell it at their restaurant.

Its why Terrapin gives beer "free" when you buy a ticket to an "event".

GA's alcohol distribution laws are arse backwards and are the reason we aren't eaten up with micro brews the way NC is. Even South Carolina has started changing a lot of their laws to make it more friendly to micro brews.

ETA... the reason your statement is False is because their location is irrelevant, you won't be able to buy it from them, you won't be able to walk in and order it. Not if they are going to sell it in stores.

They might as well be in Royston or Danielsville.

So, the absence of "The Georgia Beer Movement" I asked about........is due to fricking government busy-body meddling????????

Yep.

It's the distributor's lobby that won't allow change. They are government mandated middlemen.

Their own website makes the case that without them, taxes wouldn't be collected and moonshiners and dui's and dead children would be everywhere.

It's their contention that without them, the taxes will just be on the honor system, whatever the maker says they made and or sold, is what they pay taxes on, then the state must have an audit system to keep people honest, therefore it's cheaper to the taxpayers to just keep the 3-tier system in place where every ounce is accounted for and taxes paid. That's why the legislators are so friendly to them, as well as the generous donations they make.

Coors Light

Really, Coors makes a light beer that doesn't taste like water. Oh wait that is Coors Light.

I actually know quite a bit about this subject and Deeprig is right. Both SC and GA have to abide by the 3 tier system. NC does not, which makes it easier for them to prosper out the gate than others in 3 tier states.

GA does have a decent ABV ceiling of 14% which allows a brewer more creativity. But SC is 17 and NC is 16.

GA is biggest state east of the Mississippi and should have more craft breweries and they will given time I think.

Side note: Sweetwater does very well in US Beer Open winning a couple gold medals. Terrapin is good but they tend to brew a lot of darker, heavier, hoppier beers which means when it hits summer you may not wanna refresh yourself with chocolate milk stout.

That horse has already left the barn. The craft beer market is saturated with overpriced, over hopped beer.

Now...the craft moonshine market is just getting ramped up. Just try not to blow yourself up or get arrested.

That's what Rye P.A and RecreationAle are for.

This is the truth....there is going to be some GREAT whiskey available in the next 20 years....

You can lay the three tier system squarely at the feet of church groups around the south. It is a throwback to prohibition and should be done away with immediately.....

I am absolutely blown away that you can't buy a bottle of wine in Atlanta and have a picnic at Centennial Olympic Park without breaking the law...

I know a guy who has won several brewing contests with his home brew and was named a master brewer at several different brewing contests around the SE and he, another friend and myself looked into opening a brew pub in Athens in 1990. At that time the regulatory requirements were such that we couldn't come up with a model that we were comfortable with. He is still making some fine assed beer but he says he is glad he didn't turn his hobby into a job (understandeable).

Interestingly this guy makes Mead using wild sorghum honey and it is fricking unbeleivable....not a light , summertime concoction by any means but on a cold winter night around a fire that shite is like opium....there is reason that Mead is called the nectar of the gods...

Most people have no idea how bad Budweiser, Coors, and Miller actually is. I would go so far to say it's the furthest thing you can make that is almost not beer but technically is
