Derrick Thomas is not in the College Football’s Hall of Fame.

Normally, a phrase along these lines would match up accordingly with absurdities such as “the sky isn’t blue,” “water isn’t wet,” “beer isn’t delicious” and “tacos are overrated.”

The problem, however, is that Derrick Thomas really isn’t in CFB’s shrine as of now. There’s no good reason for this, either, not when you recall what the late, great Alabama pass-rushing machine did in his time at Tuscaloosa. He wasn't just a great defensive player, he was a transcendent talent who is all over college football's record books.

And yet, he's not in the sport's most exclusive club.

That could change this year. On Thursday, the National Football Foundation released the ballot for this year’s College Football Hall of Fame, and Thomas was one of 75 former players included. This is the fourth season he is eligible for election, although he fell short—somehow—in the first three.

Chuck Oliver says it's because his last name is too far down the list. He's already picked 15 by the time he gets to the names that start with "T".

Didn't Paul Crane play for Auburn? I could be mistaken.. ETA Yep. I was mistaken. Who was the linebacker from AU that recently died? Maybe Kurt Crain?

...another who deserves to be there. The guy could change directions 5 times in 4 steps. He made DB's look foolish.

This dude caught at least 10,000 TDs for me on the original Tecmo Bowl. He, Walter Payton and Mike Singletary made the Bears fricking legit.

few players have ever dominated a 'big time' opponent like he did vs Penn State at Legion Field in 1988. Holy Smokes !

After Bruce Feldman of CBS Sports tweeted about Thomas on Wednesday, an interesting conversation took place in the replies between Zach Barnett of Football Scoop and Birmingham sports anchor Patrick Claybon.

Barnett, who says that he worked at the NFF for two years, and in whom there is no overt reason to mistrust, claims Thomas has been kept out because Alabama's athletic department wanted to get other Tide players in ahead of him:

“@BFeldmanCBS Fact: Derrick Thomas isn't in because Alabama wanted other former Tide players in before him.

— Zach Barnett (@zach_barnett) March 5, 2014”

When pressed later in the conversation, Barnett calls the Hall of Fame balloting process "nuanced"—a word smart politicians use in place of "corrupt"—and contends that the NFF collaborates with universities to decide who gets inducted:

“@PatrickClaybon I've said more than I probably should, but HOF selection is often a collaborative process between schools and the NFF.

— Zach Barnett (@zach_barnett) March 5, 2014”

I have never been big on conspiracy theories, but this one sounds totally plausible.

Interdasting.
