not upfront, the PAC network got back loaded IIRC. The money wont start rolling in for them for another couple years

The Pac has 100% ownership. It's a different model for sure so things are naturally a little rough coming out of the gate. Not at all saying their networks won't work, simply pointing out the obvious - the Pac schools on average have smaller fan bases than the B1G or SEC schools.

In the new world, everyone is attempting to monetize their fanbases in new ways. But this isn't some communistic endeavor. Those with the big fanbases will always make the most. The race to the top is between the B1G and SEC imo

* Note this year's tv ratings

Oh and btw, in an a la carte model, Disney products apparently must be bought all or none. So every single person that goes that route will be paying for SECN. I really think it's positioned us better than the BTN (or PACN) by far by hitching ourselves to ESPN.

I know I've said it in other threads but Pac 12 Net would probably be on DTV if it wasn't 6 regional networks plus a national feed.

Almost all the football games are simulcast on the national feed so why would DTV care about a bunch of other regional sports nets that don't have anything past a few college basketball games to offer?

this is from a Barner on Scout LINK

quote:

Here are some assumptions I'm making:
Cable households per state are based on 2012 TVB.org statistics. (I believe these numbers are low, but they are the best I could find this morning.)
There will ultimately be 85% carriage on all cable/satellite households. (As reference, ESPNU has 75 million households and I'm projecting the SEC Network to be at 60 million households.)
Assume the SEC and ESPN split the revenue 50/50 - and then the SEC divides the revenue 15 ways (14 for each school and one share for the SEC office.)

Pretty important to note that this is based on 60m subscribers and we're already at ~20m. But just as important, he's also leaving out advertising and costs.

The BTN gets about $30m in advertising and generates $280m. They have a cost basis of approximately $80m. I think the SECN will have a higher cost structure (just due to higher quality production by ESPN). So if we assume $100m that leaves about $310m in profit (adding the 30m ad revenue) and split 50/50 it's about $11m per school.

Justin Connolly (ESPN SVP of college networks) interview. It's interesting but no earth shattering news.

Maybe the best article on the SEC Network yet. All but 1 of the SEC ADs were interviewed. LINK

Some interesting excerpts
quote:

Hyman said his understanding is that every SEC football team will play on the SEC Network within the first several weeks of the 2014 season. SEC and ESPN officials said they're still evaluating when teams will appear, but the goal is to have a broad network.

quote:

Slive said the content committee focuses on how the network is marketed nationally while attempting to balance minimize lost class time for athletes. The network wants to provide live sporting events every night.

That was a great link, thank you very much.

One thing I am really glad to see is how conservative the SEC is being about everything. No projections, no $X million a year, no bluster. Just honesty and low expectations early on. I think that plan is a winner.

I think this is yet another way that Aggies can thank the heavens for the LHN, because you can tell that ESPN is also being very conservative about hype before they get distribution. It is very obvious where they learned that lesson.

Personally I think its going to be huge, like 100 million subscribers in five years and much bigger than what ESPN U is today. In fact I think in ten years the SEC Network will be the mouse's third most distributed sports channel. But I dream of crossing that $15 million a year line and finally burning my last green shaggy sock.

Overall I am glad the people running the show are less gung ho than me, it bodes well for the future.

It seems like there is a college football game on just about every night in the fall, except Sunday. Does this mean there will be an SEC football game played every night?

No, not at all. In fact I've heard mention that the SEC has no plans for more than 2-3 Thurs night games a year (opening weekend and tday). Tailgating is way too big of a deal in the SEC for anything else. He is talking about other sports.

For instance

Early Fall Semester
Mon, Wed, Sun - Soccer
Tue, Thu, Fri - Volleyball
Sat - Football

Winter
All week - men's and women's hoops

Spring
Thu, Fri, Sat, Sun, Tue - baseball
Mon, Wed - Softball

And now the news that CSS is shuttering. One reason officially stated was loss of SEC content that will now go to the SEC Network.

LINK
quote:

Comcast and Charter subscribers get the channel here locally. CSS reaches 5.5 million homes in 12 states.

Presumably, the SEC Network will take its place on those networks though nothing has been confirmed.

RE: Men's hoops

"The tournament will be exclusively on our network," Connolly said. "We're also going to open our SEC basketball league telecasts next year with Florida playing Kentucky. In addition, every team will be on at least eight times."

Some original programming
