BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After hitting .625 and slugging 1.250 over a series sweep of Quinnipiac this weekend, junior infielder Will Maddox has been named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.
The Gainesville, Ga., native led Tennessee to its third weekend series sweep of the season and to the best start in program history (10-0) with a 5-for-8 performance at the plate. Maddox hit a three-run home run, two doubles and scored a team-high five runs for the series. He also drew a team-high four walks against the Bobcats.
The middle infielder is currently hitting .385 for the season with team highs in runs scored (13), slugging percentage (.692) and stolen bases (4). Maddox, who has yet to strikeout in 36 plate appearances, ranks second in the SEC in both slugging and on-base percentage (.543).
Maddox becomes the first UT player to be named SEC Player of the Week since former Vol Drew Steckenrider earned the honor on Feb. 20, 2012.
The Diamond Vols host La Salle (1-9) for two midweek games on Tuesday and Wednesday this week, before heading to Tempe, Ariz., for a three-game series with Arizona State (6-4) on the weekend. First pitch between UT and La Salle is slated for 6 p.m. both nights.
