When the yellow brick building opened in 1893, it was a modern, 20th-century hotel that quickly became a popular spot for tourists and athletes. According to “Majestic Hotel: The History of a Grande Dame,” an article by Garland County Historical Society secretary Isabel B. Anthony, Babe Ruth frequented the Majestic. The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Boston Red Sox also stayed at the hotel for their spring training and fitness programs. As tourists continued to pour into Hot Springs, the hotel expanded, with an eight-story, red-brick addition to the west of the yellow-brick building in 1926. Also in the ‘20s, another well-known visitor began showing up in town. In the mid-’30s, new spa facilities were added to the Majestic. While tourists visiting the city’s bathhouses had to leave their hotels and walk down the street for their spa therapy, guests at the Majestic simply walked down the hall. The 1963 addition of the Lanai Tower brought the Majestic’s guest room total to 400. But the hotel’s heyday couldn’t last forever. Despite more updates and additions to the Majestic over the years, the shutdown of illegal gambling in 1964 took a toll on the popularity of the Majestic and other Hot Springs hotels.

Hard to fathom that place was a favorite of mobsters and major league ball players such as Babe Ruth back in the day.

This is interesting....

Sad and I think it had been closed for quite some time. Not a mobster but I stayed there a few times and back when I played tournament chess on occasion we had tournaments at that hotel. At some point in time I heard that it was affiliated with the Arlington Hotel.

Someone just sent me this link to relatively recent pictures from inside the hotel. It was in shambles. Would have taken a fortune to restore, but it could have been magnificent again.

It is a shame that Hot Springs hasn't managed to find a way to incorporate one or two small casinos downtown. The money could be funneled to improvement and historic preservation.

Even worse to me is that nobody got to go in and retrieve all of the old wood work and fixtures that are of the type that just aren't made anymore. Instead its just lost to neglect and then fire.

Its a shame.

Make sure you check out the link Hawgeye posted above. It really was a magnificent facility in its day. My sense was like some of the other older hotels in the downtown area it probably got to where it just was not financially feasible to keep it open and was not fiscally possible to renovate it as a hotel. I guess they did bring the Velda Rose down the street back to life but I'm not sure how it's doing now. Will not be the same making the loop around the fountain without the Majestic being there.

I had played gigs there back in the day (more at the Arlington though) and spent the night there at least once that I can recall.

Really was just humongous abandoned building. Was down there last weekend and was thinking what a waste. What do you do with something that size?

Really sad. But it was in a state of disrepair (See Miz Piggy's link). Maybe the city of HS will make some of the other downtown landmarks update as close as possible to current code.

Burn it to the ground.

No seriously it was listed for sale at 2.5M and the building consisted of 185K square feet. LINK

Here's a youtube link showing it burning. LINK

Yup. Don't think the fire Dept was going to risk life or limb to put it out either.

You kind of wonder how a fire just 'started' on the 5th floor. Prob some homeless person started a little fire to try to keep warm and it got away, I'm thinking.

Yes, this is what I can't wrap my head around & is truly sickening. I've been inside twice when I was very young, and remember being in awe of it. After seeing the pictures of the interior in the link Miz Piggy posted, it is unbelievable to me that the owner(s) would not have retrieved much of the woodwork, fixtures, moldings, or any of the other valuable items left inside long before something like this happened. There is quite a market for those things, particularly in my neck of the woods. I would've loved to have some of the wood, especially the trim & moldings.

Very much a waste & extremely sad.
