Can a kicker be the biggest bust ever? If so, I vote Erxleben

God, I remember when the Saints picked him and we all just shook our heads and laughed sadly.

Then he proceeded to miss everything he kicked, even extra points. He was atrocious. He made Bama kickers look like Adam Vinatieri.

As a long suffering Falcons fan, Erxleben's first game (and it was against Atlanta) was memorable. He threw the game winning touchdown pass in OT...but it was to a Falcon after a botched snap while he was attempting to punt...

Especially in today's time, it's hard to envision a team taking a kicker in the first round...and I think he was in the top 12 or so picks, if I remember correctly...

I know during his time in college they used a tee. I don't think the pros were using one then. I could be mistaken. I know Tony Franklin from Texas A & M during the same era had a productive pro career. I think Erxleben's son punts for Texas tech and from what I've seen he wasn't very good. However, in college there were 3-5 sixty yard plus field goals in the Southwest Conference during that time: Erxleben, Tony Franklin, and the guy from Arkansas, Steve somebody.

while we are on the subject, he had a contemporary of sorts from Arkansas, Steve Little. These guys were both in the SWC,but they were basically AP/UPI first/second team All-Americans.

If I'm not mistaken,Little's pro career, although not as financially lucrative, was about as uneventful. Unless I have my story mixed up, Little took drastic measures in the wake of his pro career. Do any Arkansas posters know how things turned out for him?

Little...both he and Erxleben hit from 67 yards that year...I think some kicker in the NAIA has the all-time record though (69, I think)...

If his NFL career wasn't bad enough, he's now serving his SECOND stint in prison

He actually hung around for 6 years as a punter. His field goal kicking career was hilarious.

That was back when everything the Saints touched would turn to crap. Even Archie Manning couldn't win there.

(Yes, I liked the Saints growing up, but I don't really care about pro ball anymore.)

Little fizzled out because of no tee as well.
