Pat O’Donnell, a punter from Miami (Fla.), came to the NFL Combine and bench pressed 225 pounds 23 times. Jadeveon Clowney’s reps: 21.

For all the talk about what he’ll do in the 40-yard dash, Clowney was quite underwhelming on the bench press. There were only 13 defensive linemen this year who had fewer reps than Clowney and 36 had as many or more. Compare Clowney’s numbers to Mario Williams’, who in the 2006 Combine had 35 reps. What does it mean? Who knows, other than it’s clear Clowney either lacks the strength or strength endurance to push past a below average performance in this one test. It's worth noting, though, that Clowney has long arms — 34-1/2 inches — which makes reps harder to come by. For instance, running back Jerrick McKinnon from Georgia Southern had 32 reps, but his arms are only 30-1/4 inches long.

Nicely done
FWIW, that is beastly for a punter

He's soft and mentally weak

Clowney is weak. Prob won't be drafted first round now.
Oh and Manziel is still slower than Shaw.

Weightlifting requires work and effort for an extended period.
He's taken the easy out before. Apparently he did again.

When running a straight line (which I've never seen Johnny do), I don't think anyone has ever claimed otherwise.

I hate the "long arms" excuse.
You can either lift that weight that many times or you can't.

If Clowney had a better work ethic, he'd easily be the #1 pick in the draft. Instead, he has bust potential written all over him.

if he doesn't change his attitude he will become a locker room scapegoat

Yeah, if the Texans take him the Milkman better get his arse in line. Gotta pay the price if you want to film HEB commercials with the best defensive player in the L

With his work ethic he won't do jack shiet at the NFL.

In light of the combine's results, Steve Spurrier's comments make more sense:
quote:Damning Clowney with faint praise.
Steve Spurrier told the NFL Network “He was OK. It wasn’t like Marcus Lattimore, you know, every player is a little different. His work habits are pretty good, they’re not quite like Lattimore, a Stephon Gilmore, Melvin Ingram, some of those guys.”
