In case anyone is interested in what actual practitioners of science and medicine have to say.
Opinion piece written by the President of the American Society of Hematology (ASH):

Opinion piece written by the President of the American Society of Hematology (ASH):
quote:
In 2006, Dale Lloyd Jr., a 19-year-old freshman at Rice University who played defensive back, died one day after collapsing during football practice. It is an event that I remember well. My son was a sophomore at Rice at that time, and he was a member of the MOB (Marching Owl Band) that played in tribute.
At post-mortem examination, it was discovered that Dale had sickle cell trait (SCT). A wrongful death lawsuit was brought against Rice University and the sports conference to which the University belonged, and as part of the settlement and the aftermath of that tragic event, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) began, in 2010, the practice of screening all Division I athletes for SCT. In 2012, the policy was extended to include Division II athletes, and in 2013 Division III athletes were also included. Now, to participate in NCAA sanctioned athletics, a student must have a sickle cell test and report the results to his or her coach and trainer, or he or she can decline the test and sign a legal document that releases his or her respective university from liability.
quote:
What are the facts? SCT is common. One in 12 African-Americans (~8%) has SCT. Based on this estimate, perhaps 4 million people in the United States carry the trait (with about 300 million worldwide being affected). Although exercise-associated death in individuals with SCT is extremely rare, there are epidemiologic, but not cause-effect, data that suggest a link. A landmark study showed a 37-fold greater relative risk of sudden death during basic training in army recruits with SCT.1 Confronted with this data, the U.S. Army responded, not by screening recruits for SCT, but by implementing changes in hydration and rest rules designed to protect all inductees from the adverse effects of overexertion and hyperthermia.
quote:
A recent study surveyed newspaper reports and incident records that covered 2 million NCAA student athlete-years and identified 273 cases of sudden death.2 Only five (2%) of these were associated with SCT. All five SCT-related deaths occurred in football players, none occurred during games, and most occurred during preseason conditioning practices and thus involved less well-conditioned student athletes, akin to the less well-conditioned soldiers with SCT who died during basic military training. ASH’s statement encourages research into the effects of SCT on exercise tolerance and urges the NCAA to implement universal precautions to reduce exercise-induced injury, such as those implemented by the Army.

How does the army check you for flat feet and not sickle cell anemia?

I dont know a lot about Sickle Cell Trait, but I assume thats what used to be called Sickle cell anemia? Same thing?
As far as I know that disease only effects people of African heritage correct? However, now that their are more and more interracial marriages and kids borne from bi-racial relationships, I wonder if in the future everybody will get this test? Who knows what your genetic make up will be in the future when the world is one big melting pot.
Does the NCAA require white/asian/other populations to also get this test in order to play sports?
serious question.

5 deaths in practice.. none in games.. yet.
Of course teams have more than 5 times the amount of practices as they do games right?
but that's probably a coincidence?

Why do Auburn fans have this us against the world mentality? It is pathetic the number of posts they start about the same damn thing every day. We get that you hate Saban and BB and want nothing but bad things to happen to them and their families.

Bret is reaching for more than a cupcake, but we all knew he was full of shite. Comparatively, he makes Lane Kiffin a likeable guy.

The ones doing it are for the same reason Bama and Arky fans post so much trying their best to convince everyone that its the rest of the nation that is wrong about Saban and Bret's agenda and not the little group of them. All because they hate Gus so much and love their HC.

Well there's a lot wrong with this post, but I won't get into that. I will say this though, you are very overly dramatic.

Just because you don't like him doesn't mean he's full of shite.
tbh it means the opposite...
It's amazing though how far things have fallen for Auburn fans... from the cusp of another eventually vacated national title to the depths of having everything they need to be competitive discarded like the useless trash it is..

The trait isn't the disease itself. Sickle cell anemia is the deadly disease. I'm a white guy with SCT and it hasn't hindered me at all in my life but the report about basic training deaths is scary.

So empirical data suggests he is, yet you say he isn't while countering I am biased? Great post.

Wat?
Why do you hate data and the opinions of learned men and women of science and medicine?

Don't be so juvenile.
The adults are trying to have a conversation here.

So much for the player safety angle.
If they really gave a shite about players dying they wouldn't let them play, period.
Instead they get them to sign a waiver to CYA. lulz

I don't know the answer to that but I would hope so. A whole lotta white folks aren't as white as they might think, especially if they're from the South and have been here for generations. Also, mixed heritage is common in most people's ancestry even if it goes pretty far back so while it would be rare for sickle cell to appear in a student-athlete who had 2-3 generations of mostly 'white' heritage, genes have a funny way of popping up even several generations later. Finally, a lot of people 'passed' and so there are white folks out there who have no idea their grandparents were really black.
For example this guy was born to light-skinned black parents and chose to pass as white to avoid racism (his children never had a clue until the end of his life):
