I think the 12 empty seats idea at the new Kyle is a bad idea and will be a huge joke rather than a nice symbol/memorial. It's just unnecessary.

Discuss.

I've always understood it to be the 12 seats vacated by those who died in Bonfire.

If it is meant to be a representation of the 12th Man in any way, it's an Aggie joke.

seems silly honestly. Someone said something about forced traditions and while I disagree in general, this does feel it.

Maybe they'll probably abandon the idea and just give those seats to the employees of the Ticket Office

I hadn't heard about this, I was wondering what was being referred to in that rant thread. Yeah...that's dumb.

The way it's been presented is confusing and it does seem a little forced. I get what they're trying to do but to me putting up some sort of statue or mini memorial by one of the main concourse entrances would have been a better idea.

Regardless I will defend on tRant like it's my firstborn child

I will be honest I like it.

To outsiders, sure its a joke. Anything that is not treating the entire concept of Bonfire like the holocaust because they died will be seen as a joke. That is the modern world in which we live.

I think this is a very mature way to accept and incorporate the loss into our traditions. To respect those who died without some sort of constant beating ourselves up about the past.

One of my favorite things about A&M is that our insular nature makes it so that we can walk out of step with the modern world. Sure that gives rivals fodder, but part of being an Aggie is not caring.

There are MANY MANY things about us out of date in a modern society- our innocent handling of Reville, our greater respect of everything associated with the military (instead of a ticky tacky matrix of who we support), men cheerleaders, etc.

Throw it on the pile.

It feels like a marketing tool, not a memorial. Like their memory is being bastardized for the purpose of promoting the stadium. The more I think about it, the worse it sounds.

IMO, the bigger issue is the lack of symmetry. The field wont be centered with respect to the stands and the extension from the second deck of the North endzone wont match up with the second deck on the student side (but will on the alumni side).

I'm just afraid not demolishing the entire student side is gonna make it look super awkward.

I haven't made uo my mind about this yet. I want to hear from the school exactly what it represents before I decide.

Yeah I honestly don't care too much one way or the other. I do think memorializing bonfire in the new stadium should be done and I'm glad we are doing it. That's what's most important to me. How we go about it isn't that important to me

But there is a Bonfire Memorial. And it happened 15 years ago. If we'd saved the seats in 1999 and continued it til today, it's a touching tribute. Starting today, I just don't get it.

I do fear about the intentions, yes.

See that makes sense to me. The whole stadium was seen as sacred ground for too long.

Remember the HUGE deal when the student section changed entering the SEC? A few got moved, more were let in, no big deal today. But it was like the worst thing ever when it happened. I couldn't imagine trying to force something like this before the overhaul made us embrace change.

I see this stadium as our big reboot. By forcing a reshuffle of the alums everything is up in the air and we can do things we maybe should have done a long time ago.

Plus there was the whole issue that when this happened this was all VERY VERY serious. Lawsuits, accusations, dead kids. Doesn't get worse than that.

I see this as a lighter and final chapter to the tragedy. We can finally embrace that despite how they died in the end they were part of the 12th man too. We can keep their memory from only being a solemn and painful reminder of mistakes. I really like that.

Yea I think it's dumb but it probably relates to 12th Man trademark shite and they just toss the memorial thing on top to stop people from questioning it.

I like it.

I think it would also be pretty cool to allow the families of the victims to sit in those seats. Just another way to show that the 12 who died will never be forgotten

Agreed. It feels much too forced, and how would you like to be students who have seats near the empty twelve, and have to face the constant reminder of a tragedy all game long? The Bonfire memorial is an appropriate and amply sufficient monument to the memory of the 12 who died.
