There is a new guy at work, a Russian. He loves everything about America that we all love, and hates everything about America that we hate.

He's a good kid.

We were recently talking about sports, and he went on to talk his usual pinko shite about soccer etc..

But something he said stuck with me.

They don't stop a soccer match for commercials. There are no TV timeouts. The only time you see a commercial is when they do a replay, there will be a sponsor on the bottom half of the screen.

He said if they ever changed the rules of soccer to allow timeouts for television commercials, there would be riots, and there would literally be people murdered.

So why do we Americans allow our football games, which is 60 minutes of gametime, to be chopped up and bastardized to 4 hours for the purpose of a TV network to show advertisements? Do we not love our sport as much?

I've got to go with the Russian on this.

frick TV timeouts.

frick Americans for allowing this shite.

Different advertising laws over seas. I wanna say the UK only allows like 10 mins an hour and no photo shopped ads. China won't allow any product to claim to be #1 if it isn't backed by fact. Germany I think does the same and doesn't allow ads to attack other companies.

We just have a different set up. That and idk if soccer could work like that. Idk, just my thoughts.

From snap to whistle there is only 13-17 min of actual football during a 60 min game

I couldn't imagine no commercial breaks

Worst excuse possible. You should be ashamed of yourself. You acquiesce to the hot-dog lips and assholes pumped into your brain and say advertising laws have something to do with it.

When there is a natural stop in game play, that's one thing.

Creating stops in game play, that's horse shite.

"OK, the ball turned over, we'll be back in 6 minutes"

frick it.

I hear ya. Games would be about 2 hours as opposed to 4. That's a lot of lost ad revenue and empty air time

3 or 4 years ago I was at a UGA game that was pay per view against some cupcake, I dont remember who, we won 40 something to 0 something, and the game was an hour and 50 minutes.

It was beautiful. They should all be like that.

Wasn't saying I liked it. My point was we've grown accustomed to a different set of standards than Europeans.

Having 30943820394823789 commercial breaks during our football games is exactly why the rest of the world doesn't get into the sport. They are accustomed to the fast paced continuation of soccer. It's the same reason why the rest of the world is starting to embrace basketball.

Football and especially the college game would benefit from not having these dumb arse 6 minute breaks after a momentum swinging score or turnover.

The obvious difference: capitalism vs countries that have more socialism.

America is a socialist country, more socialist in many ways than China and Russia. It's a non-factor in this discussion.

Fast paced continuous action my arse for 80 min of the 90 they stare across from each other and kick the ball between a couple teammates or flop around on the ground after getting breathed on.

Most bullshite 'Merica they took our jobs answer ever. Football players are flopping now too, but they aren't getting ejected like they do for blatant ones in soccer.

I might not be up to date on advertising law in the US but advertising is not considered a full form of free speech and is actually one of the least protected forms of speech in the US. You can't say something's number one in the us if it isn't. You can get around it but you can't lie. I remember the example of t mobile. They claimed they had the fewest dropped calls. They got away with it. It was true. They did have the fewest amount of dropped calls. They also had by far the fewest amount of customers.

As to comparing between the US and Europe. I've lived in both places though not too long in Europe. There is way more advertising in Europe I felt but its a completely different strategy. In the us it's passive commercials. In the countries I've been in Europe, it feels like your being hunted down.

You're kind of wrong. The Galaxy phone had the TV ad talking about how great the camera it had. They claimed it could do a lot of things that it can't. They were taken to court and their defense was that no one would reasonably believe it could perform so well and THEY WON.

It's probably already been mentioned in this thread, but the game of soccer is designed as a continuous play sport and football is designed to have several play stoppages (tackles, turnovers, time outs, penalties, etc....)

It's the same with baseball and showing commercials during the change of teams batting or innings.
