Not sure if any of you saw the Amber Alert for the missing girl out of Springfield. He was believed to be going to Oklahoma so they were alerting people on NWA to keep an eye out for the vehicle in case he came down this way, they found him this morning and the body of the little girl this morning dead. Sad world we live in people do things like this.

SPRINGFIELD, Missouri -

The Springfield, Missouri Police Department said they've arrested a 45-year-old man in connection with the abduction of a 10-year-old girl Tuesday afternoon.
A family friend has told Springfield CBS affiliate KOLR-TV that Hailey Owens' body has been found.

An amber alert was issued on Tuesday for Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma on behalf of the Missouri Highway Patrol for Hailey Owens.

According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, 10-year-old Hailey M. Owens was abducted around 4:48 p.m. Tuesday afternoon in Springfield, Missouri. Witnesses told police Owens was walking near her home when a man grabbed her and forced her into his pickup truck.

Owens was last seen wearing blue jean shorts and purple sandals. She is 5'2", 90 pounds, has brown hair, brown eyes and pierced ears. The suspect is a white male, age 45 to 55, 6'1", 200 pounds and has grey hair. He is believed to be driving a gold, 2008 Ford Ranger Pickup with Missouri tag number 1YF454.

When the Springfield Police Department initially issued the Amber Alert, they believed Owens may have been taken to Oklahoma.

Just before 7 a.m. Wednesday, the Springfield Police Department said the Amber Alert was canceled.

Police said a Ford Ranger pickup and a suspect were located at a home in Springfield. They said Craig Michael Wood was arrested and booked into the Greene County jail on a complaint of first-degree murder.

Springfield Police Chief Paul Williams said Wednesday morning that evidence at the scene indicated foul play had taken place. He did not take questions and did not comment on the girl's status

Yeah my phone went off yesterday with the alert, and it was all over the news.

Sad stuff.

The sumbitch was an employee at k-8 public school.

Hope he gets it dry everyday of his sad pathetic life.

This is why I don't volunteer to help Youth Sports anymore. The unmarried childless bald guy is absolutely a creeper pedo.

I hope they let him in general pop on accident. I don't want to wait 20 years for her family to get justice that'll never heal losing a child like that.

I'm fricking enraged by this! Something as awful as this seems sort of distant until you have children of your own...and then it becomes all too real.

Scares the crap out of me.

I'm with you on that. I can't hear about about any tragedy involving a child without getting sick to my stomach.

Throw in the fact that it happened in Springfield.

My wife is always trying to go to bed at night without locking up the house because she says we live in a "safe" neighborhood. I say frick that and lock everything up while arming our security system on instant and setting the motion detectors before I turn off the lights. People are crazy these days and there is no longer such a thing as a nice neighborhood.

Agreed. You may live in a safe neighborhood but all it takes is one crazy to walk and and decide to come into your home.

Bullshitting and trolling aside, Springfield is a pretty damn safe and great city and I've lived in awesome places like San Diego and Morehead City, NC.

This isn't a Springfield problem. This is a psycho problem that could occur anywhere at any time. It happens in the smallest of towns as well as the largest of cities.

My heart breaks for this girl's family. I can't imagine what she experienced. Her family will be haunted forever.

And, on top of that, this act of evil has tarnished a wonderful city's reputation and violated the community's innocence.

This man should die slowly and experience the most extreme pain imaginable.

You'll love North Carolina. Very beautiful state. You'll be close to mountains and ocean.

However, if you're moving to a place that is somewhat rural, be prepared for an odd 21st century version of self segregation between races.

I think that's what surprised me the most.

I just want to know why the Sprinfield PD was so damn stupid in this situation. You pull up to the guys house at night, he has a roll of duct tape, and you wait till the next morning for a search warrant to go inside? Hell no, you bust his door down that moment and search for the girl. What if he killed her post police encounter that night?

Didn't they take him in for questioning after they initially went to his house? That's how I'm interpreting this:

quote:

Police tracked the license plate to Jim Wood in Ash Grove, who told them his son drove that vehicle. Police were watching his home at 1538 E. Stanford St. in Springfield when Craig Wood pulled into the driveway about 8:30 p.m.

According to court documents, Wood threw a roll of duct tape into the bed of the truck when he saw officers. Wood matched the witnesses’ description and was taken in for questioning. The documents say he initially told police he went straight home from work but later said he drove around for a while. He denied having contact with Hailey.

Police checked Wood’s house for signs of Hailey and smelled bleach. After obtaining a search warrant they found her body.

Anyone have a link to the actual police report?

Not saying that I agree with you on that beebe, I dont know the laws but mabey somthing like that would hinder the investigation/conviction? No one will ever know when this dude actually killed her and that is the sad part of this even happening.

Say the police officer did bust in, he could be risking his life as well. (Not saying thats not his job, but think of the situation at hand.) Also if he did get in and it was after he did it, I believe they found her in a container (Tote, Rubermaid Container etc.)

There are alot of questions that do make the situation seem more sad, such as when the first sight of this happening a 911/call to the police was made. Why did it take 3 hours to issue an amber alert? I have heard that the community are asking these questions. At the same time, I think they are very lucky for the information that lead to the arrest of this individual because if not this guy would still be free.

Very sad this happend with this young girl walking from a friends house and only walking back 2 blocks to her residence. I dont know all of this information but do live in Harrison and all of our news and reporting outlets are from Springfield (KSPR and KY3 News). Prayers to the community of Springfield MO and family of this victim!

I think before we start pointing fingers and making accusations we need to learn all the facts.

No matter what's being reported...I find it very difficult to believe that if any police department in an amber alert situation had reason to believe that an abducted girl was inside a home that they would fail to act.

I need more facts before jumping to that conclusion.

This article also makes it sound like Wood was taken from the scene immediately after police saw him with the duct tape, which was their first visit to this house:

quote:

When detectives arrived at Craig Wood’s home, at 1538 E. Stanford, Springfield, he drove up in a vehicle matching the description of the suspect truck, with the same license plate that witnesses had remembered, the statement says.

When Wood stepped out of the truck, he had a roll of duct tape in his hands, which he threw in the bed of the truck, police say.

Wood agreed to go to police headquarters for an interview. At first he told detectives he went straight home after work at Pleasant View Middle School, where he was a paraprofessional and a coach, but then said he drove around for a while.

He denied having any contact with Owens. The probable cause statement does not note if Wood continued to talk. Police Chief Paul Williams indicated earlier Wednesday that Wood was not cooperating with the investigation.

When Wood was taken in for questioning, officers did a safety sweep of his home, Williams said.

“When the officers got to the basement steps, they could smell a strong odor of bleach. The odor continued as they entered the basement. The officers informed me the basement floor was wet. They also said they saw bottles of bleach in the basement,” the probable cause statement said.

The probable cause statement does not note whether they saw the body at that time.

A search warrant was obtained at 1:28 this morning. When authorities searched the basement, they say they found Owens in the storage tote.

At the time the probable cause statement was written, technicians were still processing the scene.

It sounds like he took her to his house, killed her, left the house and got duct tape, then returned to his house. When he arrived, police were already there. They saw him with the duct tape, he agreed to go in for questioning, and the police did a sweep around the house and smelled bleach and saw that the basement floor was wet. They obtained a search warrant and went into the house, and that's when they found her body.

The article I read said they questioned him that night and returned the next morning with a search warrant.

And by "next morning" they mean 1:28 am, so basically the same night.
