It was a quite a visit. Del Conte grabbed a car, a driver and a bunch of reference material, binders, extolling the advantages of TCU and Fort Worth.

“I get up at 8 o'clock in the morning and drive to Darrell K. Royal Stadium. I get to [Dodds'] office. Nine comes around, 10 comes around. I've got a GA [graduate assistant] outside waiting for me, by the way. I tell him, ‘Just wait 10 minutes I'll be back.' Pretty soon it's 3:30.

“[DeLoss] comes out and says, ‘Who are you?' Chris Del Conte, Texas Christian U. He doesn't hear ‘Chris.' he hears ‘Del'. ‘Del, let's go get ourselves a drink and discuss it.'

“We went to a restaurant and had a little libation at 3:30. By the time 8:30 rolls around, we were [into it] pretty good but we got ourselves in a situation. I kept trying to give him my [binders]. He said, ‘I've heard enough, Del' and just walked away.”

The Big 12 ADs had a conference call the next day.

TCU looks like an upgrade when you have beer goggles apparently.

I'll never forget being lectured by an OU fan (a guy whom I respect, but disagreed with on football matters, obviously) about how the big12 made the right move in "letting" A&M/Mizzou go and adding TCU/WVU.

Upgrades, indeed. For the former pair of schools.

I think we all have a story about that. Mine is:

At the time of the move, my sister was going to Texas. One day I went to visit her in Austin before I lived here and we went out to eat with her then boyfriend (another Texas student). He was telling me how "excited" he was to play TCU, because "they thought they were the best team in the state" and it would be great to "put them in their place." He was going for the butthurt.

But I simply responded "Yeah, I don't know why the two biggest Texas teams played each other each year at the end of the year. It ensures that only one team has a shot at something greater. I am looking forward to our new matchup on Thanksgiving , LSU."

His response: "What, yall are going to play LSU on Thanksgiving?!?" followed by the biggest bunch of real world butthurt I have ever seen.

This should be a "said no one ever" moment, except he, you know, said it

It was great. It was the closest thing in my life to a "rant-level" moment IRL. He was just SOOOO smug about TCU's success and the appeal of that matchup. He didn't even think to expect the LSU twist. It was a 180 in his verbal and non-verbal communication.

After I confirmed that the game would happen as I said, all he could muster is a "LSU, well good for yall" is a very defeated tone.

That reminds me of the story Reggie Miller tells of him bragging to his sister Cheryl about a big 40 point game he had, and then her turning around with the news that she'd dropped 105 on the same night

Agreed. I mean, everything about realignment has been sweet. But winning the battle for Thanksgiving?

That was the real cherry.

The cherry on top of the cherry? Most LSU fans hate it.

I prefer Thanksgiving Friday myself. The last game of the season is the only thing set I believe. The game can rotate Thursday, Friday or Saturday year-to-year...I think.

I think it will be Thursdays when its in Kyle and Fridays when its in DV, rotating back and forth.

I get why you prefer T+1 (as we call it). I personally prefer T+1 all things being equal.

But all things are not equal, as LSU playing us on Thanksgiving is the ULTIMATE f-you to the arrogant ones that in 2011 believe THEY owned the Thanksgiving game (and tried to prove it with the rotation crap).

Nothing shines a brighter light on the crappiness of the Big 12 than this situation. I will always appreciate LSU playing ball on this issue and compromising, it is our best chance to bury the RRR (maybe year one).

Geez, if ever there was more conformation Dodds needed to be put out to pasture. Not b/c they eventually went with TCU when it would have made better sense to get Louisville or Cincy to give WVU a travel partner but b/c DeLoss was so out of the loop he didn't even know TCUs ADs name nor could he be bothered to do a quick info check before he talked to the guy after making him wait several hours outside his office.

You would think the AD at Texas should know the names of every other Texas based FBS and FCS AD in the state he had worked in for 30+ fricking years.

What I love about it is that OU declares "We will not be a wallflower" and then not only did they get rejected to the point they ran out of options, but they didn't even have enough power IN conference to get the correct choice at 12 (Louisville).

We are all enjoying the fallout at Texas, but they are not the real story. Long-term they are fine, even if they have to leave the Big 12 to get to a better place.

Who is REALLY REALLY getting screwed in all this is OU, and the only thing they can do about it (actually win on the field ALA Bama game) isn't enough because college football is a beauty contest.

OU has found a lifeline living on their historical reputation on the west coast. But instate they are nearly sunk, and the RRR isn't a top 10 game every year anymore.

I hate OU for stealing our birthright so at first I really enjoyed their misery about the situation (I used to love lurking on dickthieves). But now their pain is so intense that I get scared they might actually leave OSU to die and make a move.

Honestly once it had time to sink in I appreciated them beating Bama because maybe that will placate the Sooners for a few years. They can brag about winning the big battle as they lose the larger war.
