Just when it seems like things are starting to clear up, it happens. Again. And the middle of the conference is back to being a cluster. But the latest Bracketology shows 4 teams in, so there's that!

Special thanks to a certain voter for the new word added to our collective lexicon this week.

Special thanks to SpartyGator and 1813, our guest votes of the week winners!

And here we go...

Text version
1. Florida
2. Kentucky
3. Missouri
4. Tennessee
5. Ole Miss
6. Georgia
7. LSU
8. Arkansas
9. Vanderbilt
10. Texas A&M
11. Auburn
12. Alabama
13. South Carolina
14. Mississippi State

Georgia is ranked sixth? Bogus.

Georgia is currently ranked third in the conference after going 8-4 after 12 games - a pretty good representative sampling.

So the SECr ranks Ole Miss ahead of us. We just beat them and they are only 6-6 in conference play.

Then the SECr ranks Tennessee ahead of us. They are only 6-6 in conference play. But hey, we haven't played them yet and they may very well kick our arses in Knoxville tomorrow so I'll give you that one. I mean, by any objective measure, Georgia should be ranked ahead of them as of today. But I'm feeling generous.

Then we have Missouri. We beat them at their place and they are currently 6-6 in conference play. And y'all have them ranked third.

I officially declare the Official Week 7 Basketball Power Rankings to be a heaping pile of flaming biased horse shite.

Have a nice day.

Beat LSU and lose to Mizzou by 1 point and move down. Seems legit.

I think what you're seeing is a reflection of parity in the "pack" part of the conference. The 4 teams ranked at the top of the SEC are the 4 teams in the tourney based on the latest bracketology. I see your argument - but you're leaving out overall records, stats, intangibles, etc. The power rankings is not simply a W-L record.

I think our 8-4 record clearly shows UGA has broken out of that pack. Now - they ain't close to the Fla/Ky pack ( ), but they are no longer in the 6-6 and lower pack either.

And I think that's where the bias comes in. Especially with Missouri. Missouri has done nothing in conference play that shows they should be ranked ahead of UGA. Nothing. But they did play UGA at home - and lost.

So, outside of bias, it's really a no-brainer, imo. But I am willing to admit my own UGA bias could be peeking through.

Still - under any objective measure - UGA = 3rd.

If this were really true, then UGA would be ranked ahead of Mizzou, Tennessee and Ole Miss. Because since conference play began UGA has played better than all three of those teams.

But, apparently, the power rankings are really just ranking teams with the best overall records, not how they are currently playing.

Which is fine, and not a bad way to do it. But don't pretend it's otherwise. If it were, UGA would be ranked higher.

UGA's problem is simple. You went 6-6 in the non-conference. Mizzou went 13-1 in the non-con. The NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, and the sports public at large, cares more about your overall body of work than just your conference record, especially in a league as weak as the SEC is this year. If being 8-4 in league rather than 6-6 mattered so much, wouldn't UGA be on the NCAA tournament bubble right now rather than Mizzou? But they're not.

I will say that conference play is definitely important, and a team improving as year goes on and peaking in the conference schedule is a great thing and Mark Fox has done a great job doing more with less this year. But that alone isn't always enough to push you into the upper echelon. One of my favorite all time Mizzou teams was a team in 1987 that, like your UGA team this year, lost a whopping 6 games in the non-conference. That Mizzou team improved though as year went on like UGA, went 11-3 in conference and won the Big Eight regular season championship and then the tourney championship. It also cracked the Top 20 national rankinigs at season's end. But the difference was, as part of its journey that Mizzou team beat a couple of Top 15 nationally ranked teams along the way. Georgia's opportunities to do that were Florida and Kentucky but you didn't get it done. That combined with the weakness of the conference is what drags you down despite a nice 8-4 league record.

The RPI rankings and Kenpom rankings both have UGA ranked 8th in the SEC, the BPI rankings have UGA 10th. Mizzou is 3rd in RPI and BPI and 4th in Kenpom. It is what it is.

No question. I just thought that the SEC Power Rankings looked more at the SEC and how teams were playing now.

Based on what you posted you are absolutely right.

We're still 3rd in the conference, though, so ...

What is Georgia's overall record, not just conference? That's one thing that has Missouri at 3 right now. Not just their conference record.

I see your point, just trying to look at all the angles. And no, I'm not a team voter.

Yeah. At least the SEC recognizes the better team.

You are, and you have an opportunity coming up in Athens to pull a clean sweep of Mizzou and hammer home that winning the first conference game against us was no fluke. UGA has done more to hurt the SEC bubble team's NCAA tourney chances than anyone in the league, beating Mizzou, Ole Miss, LSU and Arky. For the sake of the league I surely would like if UGA could have a do-over of the non-con cuz I don't think you'd go 6-6 again and have improved, but there's just no going back.

I get that. I just thought the power ratings were for the 'now'.

If not, then fine. But it seems to run true to form on conference record until you get to Ole Miss and UGA.

And I have to live in the 'now' because the future scares me too.
