SEC Towns and Marijuana-related Arrests

I don't have the statistics in front of me to demonstrate that a disproportionate number of SEC athletes are arrested for pot, compared to the total or student populations. But it sure seems like it.
Is there a police culture in some of these towns that incentivizes making big, headline-making arrests? Or do athletes smoke more pot than the general population?

Blacks tend to smoke (or get caught) more than other races, and most athletes are black.

Here's your answer for Tuscaloosa:

Drug bust season! Around the beginning of every calender year, the UAPD decides to turn hundreds of students' lives upside down for smoking pot or taking pills.
I'm not sure why.

Isn't that also the reason for Athens?

I'm pretty sure I read on Politifact that blacks are several times more likely than whites to get arrested for marijuana even though they smoke at similar rates.

Solid argument, OP.
We need more threads around here with this kind of solid, evidence based deduction.

I saw that too. I think there's also discrimination in gun possession arrests also.

The TPD have been incredibly rude and overly-eager to use violence in my experience.
Imagine a self-absorbed guy with no self esteem and a chip on his shoulder, that is a good start for most TPD.

That's a true story. Here's the link to a Huffington Post/AOL.com article...

I was the guy that contacted the chief of police and told him to get his crap together.
At that point we had had 8 players arrested for STUPID stuff like "disorderly conduct" for playing music too loud... Players that had never been in trouble before.
It was absurd.

Now, this all might seem kind of petty until you understand the growing unease of an Alabama fan base that has seen more players arrested (8) than wins (7) in the year since Nick Saban took over the program. Tuscaloosa seems to be one of the college towns where arresting a student-athlete is a trophy of sorts for the local po-po; a statement that anybody is fair game, but especially those who make headlines. That may or may not be a fair assessment, but it's a growing concern in places where high-profile students seem to get in more trouble than the average student.

I'm guessing blacks are far more likely to have their cars searched during routine traffic stops than whites are.

University Police are exceptionally a-hole-ish. I've seen people stopped several times on bikes across from Reese Phifer for no apparent reason

Marijuana was only made illegal because black people were perceived to smoke more than whites. Easy way to keep 1 out of 4 black men incarcerated/legal trouble.

I might be labeled a racist but this applies to all football players
These kids would not normally get into school like normal kids applying. So they lack the common sense of decent students. So they are a lot dumber about when/where they smoke marijuana and overestimate how bulletproof they are.
They are just dumber than the average student

While UAPD are assholes, the early semester sweep is the work of West Alabama Narcotics. frick them.

I also feel like TPD doesn't give a flying frick about DUI. I can't tell you how many times I've seen obviously drunk drivers, with cops around, not giving a shite. I've seen a sorority girl open her driver door, puke out a gallon of tequila and keep on driving. With a cop behind her who doesn't give a shite.
But if you're a little drunk and a little black and you decide you want some Quick Grill, prepare your anus.
