In a couple weeks, we'll be getting away, somewhere within driving distance of Tuscaloosa

These are places we are considering

Nashville
Memphis
New Orleans
Smoky Mountains
Gulf Shores/Orange Beach
Savannah/Charleston

Memphis and New Orleans are safe bets, we've been to each multiple times and love those cities.

I've only spent a few days in Nashville (Music City Bowl about a decade ago), my wife has never spent significant time there.

Neither of us have been to Savannah or Charleston, but it may be too far.

We don't have too much experience with Alabama beaches. How would we feel about Gulf Shores/Orange Beach if we're used to 30-A/Destin? Also, we'd only go if it was warm enough.

The Smokies are the Smokies. Incredibly beautiful and incredibly tacky. We'd only go if it was snowy.

This. Going to the beach with your GF is never a bad move. If you're going to go that far though I'd drive the little extra to Destin.

Too far to drive from Tuscaloosa for only a weekend. Would be a waste of time, as is Charleston.

I'd go with Nashville, personally.

Savannah is on my "To Do" list. Heard it's beautiful there. But I'm a also a sucker for any kind of city that really celebrates it's historic roots too.

A pretty sure bet. Don't know how warm the water will be in a couple weeks though.

ETA: Skimmed over where you said from Tuscaloosa. Nashville would probably be the best bet this time of year. Depending on when you go though, keep in mind they typically host early rounds of the NCAA Tournament and hotels are usually tied up during that time.

She's my wife. And we have a condo on 30-A. It's our default if everything else falls through. We want something different, I grew up in PCB/Destin/FWB. How would I feel about Orange Beach?

It's different. Way more laid back IMO. Went last summer and the restaurant selection is pretty good. Not as good as Destin but for a weekend you'll eat well. Avoid Original Oyster House. That's my only advice. It used to be great but it is terrible now.

The beaches were also nice and well kept.

I would go to Nashville and then drive an hour north to Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky for a day.

Both.

Honestly I've never had an issue, but I always hear stories. I love visiting though.

It's more than an hour to Mamoth but still worth the drive.

That time of year I like Natchez, MS, but I'm a sucker for historical stuff, especially with a casino in the vicinity.

Don't be a fool.

Smokeys. Every time. Cabin in the mountains with a view, if possible.

You will not regret it.

I couldn't have been any happier with Gulf Shores.

Gulf Shores/Orange Beach IMO. Can't beat the beach.

Much more laid back than Destin. So depends on the type of weekend you want.
