Background info: A good friend, his son's birthday who will be graduating from high school this year and wants to go to Duke but will probably end up playing baseball for Kennesaw State. I really don't like him and want to avoid giving cash.

Any suggestions?

But seriously, why do you not like the kid? I'm curious?

He acts too cool for his parents or anyone else and last time I spoke with him we had a conversation about Call of Duty

Welcome to a normal 18 year old kid.

That does sound like most teenagers, but I can understand not wanting to deal with him.

My recommendation would be a leatherman tool. I think they're 25-30 bucks, and I still have mine that I received as a hs graduation gift from someone.

If I give him cash I will probably act like he never existed and walk away and never talk to him again. Kinda like pay-off money. I'm trying to do the right thing... Leatherman is the leading candidate so far.. maybe a Duke hat to rub it in that he's not attending.. or maybe some made for TV gadget.

I know what you mean about the disrespectful behavior. It's bad enough when they're younger teens, but when they're 18 years old and about to graduate from high school then attend college, they should have matured enough to absolutely know better than to continue with that kind of crap.

I don't blame you for not wanting to give him cash. I generally ask the parent, who I'm usually decent friends with, what the kid needs or wants the most for college. Many times I do give cash, though. I just remind myself that it's helping out the parents (my friends) who need all the help they can get if they're picking up the tab for jr.'s education.
