I've seen it where the refs keep the time on the field. Pandora's box or something.

Can a defensive player stand in the offensive backfield until the play clock reaches 30 seconds?

This is a big issue with the rule too. He can go a grab arse with the RB from the other team for 10 seconds. This rules committee made themselves look like idiots on this one.
There is a reason a rule like this has never been proposed - it's fricking stupid.

Whats the problem? The players have the same issue of knowing when it's going to hit zero.
