We are renting right now, so not my house, but had to pack the wife and kids up and head to a friends house.

Double check the lease to make sure of your responsibilities, like notifying the landlord in a timely manner or to take action to minimize damage.

And while you are double checking, find out what happens when an act of god does something like this... is he responsible for putting you up in a hotel while the place is being repaired? Does it simply nullify the lease?
NC laws are going to be different from GA laws so I won't be much help there either.
