The REAL issue Michael Sam raises......

is the issue of how we define masculinity. For many men, pursuing and having sex with women is THE measure of masculinity. Along with courage, strength, honor, and all the other qualities that define it.
In reality, though, any squirrelly little nerd (think Woody Allen) can get women into bed with him, whereas very few men can become successful in a violent sport, especially in the hand-to-hand combat that being a lineman entails.
So the guys who are hostile to Sam and others like him are, I think, threatened by the idea that the equating of heterosexuality and masculinity is being exposed as the nonsense it has always been....and are fearful of the identity issues it raises, particularly if they are not anywhere near the level of guys like Michael Sam when it comes to REAL measures of masculinity.....

This is ridiculous. The guy is attracted to other men and is great at football. That is all there is to it. People need to get a grip.

Not sure I understand all the hate for the OP, which makes me wonder if I am misunderstanding the OP or if others are. Someone explain.

I think the masculinity definition is a problem for some people with acceptance of homosexual men.
However in my experience it is usually the religious or ignorant argument that causes the most trouble; the idea that the behaviour is not only a choice, but a sin.
I've never met a homosexual man that didn't feel strongly that his sexuality was a part of him, not a 'choice'.

Ten replies so far and I see that I have left everyone speechless--which is a sure sign that I have hit on the truth.
Look, we all know that the reason gays have not been tolerated and homosexuality has not been acceptable among men in this culture is because it is considered unmasculine. Gay men are regarded as "sissies".
Just think of all the epithets used to attack gay men--I won't make a list of them, but suffice it to say that the purpose of ALL of them is to call the guy's masculinity into question...
So when faced with a situation where a man of superior masculinity is, in fact, homosexuual......many run for the hills, as I think you are seeing in this thread....

Goes back to the definition of masculinity, which for most people is different for them personally. Its an argument that can't really be solved because both sides can't see the other's point of view. It just comes down to the fact that we shouldn't be concerned with things that don't affect us.
I think its a little ridiculous that he publicly came out to the national media. Its his business and he shouldn't come out at all, it should be a non issue. Coming out and making a scene of it completely betrays the fundamental goal of homosexuals being treated equal, nobody makes a national announcement that they are straight.

I agree it should be a non issue, however I can guarantee you there is still some very real hate out there for homosexual men.
It isn't like it used to be, but acceptance isn't quite there yet.
