.. and not making people in Memphis or Tunica very happy.

Southland Park $37M Expansion - West Memphis, Ark

LINK

Oaklawn Park (Another Additional Expansion Approved) $41M Expansion - Hot Springs, Ark

LINK

"According to the Arkansas Racing Commission, electronic games of skill (EGS) wagers at Oaklawn totaled $476.27 million in the first five months of 2013." Mississippi gambling down 13.5% in 2013 while Arkansas rose 20%.

LINK

We are taking money from other states finally! We did it to Missouri on the lottery and now doing it to Mississippi in gambling. Millions are estimated for the counties, the state and added purses to both race tracks drawing in new customers to spend money in our state.

Last but not least.. Fort Smith, doing what my home town does best..

The people who cannot afford to are often the people who frequent these places, then get taxpayer subsidies for thier poor lifestyle choices.

Debt at an all time high, 25 year olds living at hone, low savings, this will all come crashing down soon. Not sure why you are so proud of these places? Burn me all down IMO.

I agree ...but that has everything to do with those people's choices, not the places. Legislating morality only makes it illegal, it doesn't change peoples morals. If people want to gamble, they're going to find some place, some way to do it.

If we're going to do that, start with the Federal Reserve. Its very existence depends upon debt.

Winchell said she’s not sure anybody in Fort Smith’s city government even wants to know those statistics.

Damn, head is all buried deep in the sand in the Fort.

I am unsympathetic to the 40yr+ crowd who dominates these casino's when they were educated in the same Arkansas public school system (by tax payers) as myself and then decided to make their own personal choices on how to spend their money.

Those same people you're speaking about know the odds and how to play the games very well. They are not ignorant to the odds but like the action. We all have our vices. If a 70yr lady wants to place bets and likes the action more power to her. As for the government assistance realm, feel free to vote for people to change the system.

Arkansas was losing millions to Missouri on their lottery and now we are keeping the money in the state and sending more kids to college. If the 40yr+ crowd wants to give their money away I want them to do it in Arkansas, not Oklahoma, Mississippi or Missouri. Those individuals have already long been educated by the same system.

The smart ones will be able to buy cheap when it all comes crashing down and it will. Education/psychology is to blame and nothing else. Guess who funds and sets the guidelines for the subpar education system we have in place? (does anyone know why the flag sometimes doesn't work and reads :isa:?)

I am not trying to get political. I am all for helping our state keep dollars home while crushing the competitive market of neighboring states, to which all have gambling. Furthermore, creating jobs.

Arkansas is finally fencing off the the out flux of 100's of millions of dollars that formerly went to neighboring states economies.

Debt is fine to a point. We are passed, the people are broke.

These are the people in casinos, then I have to pay taxes to support them. Profits from casinos should be taxed egregiously IMO. Like 70%.

I am not really 'anti-casino', in fact I have spent a few dollars a them and used to throw a few bucks at the horses at Oaklawn. Lottery gets high enough and I'll by %20 worth of numbers...

But I really saw the sad side as I was leaving a casino in Greenville, MS that I had stopped at as I left town on a business call.

As I was walking down the 'gangplank' walkway, an elderly African American couple were walking in, clutching what was obviously their social security check, which they were going to cash - and you could see it in their eyes: This time they were going to hit it big. Most likely left there with much less than they went in with.

That is sad yet I don't feel that sorry for her.. My generation won't even have a social security check to spend yet her generation helped kick the can down the road on our massive problems. Heck, she might be old and is bored therefore just wanting something to do knowing the next check will just keep on coming like it always does. Thanks to us who let it happen. She is to far behind the eight-ball to invest anyway. I'm all for helping people but giving them money is not the right way to help someone in need. Education and food in my opinion.

If you invested for a 10% return over 40 yrs it would take you $2,300 a month put away to have $1 Million dollars in year 40. Good luck finding anything besides the stock market that pays a continual average rate of 10% return.

Why would y'all not want to keep the money in-state?

The only thing I've ever purchased with debt is half a house and one vehicle. Don't even get me started on the Federal Reserve. SH is absolutely right. It's going to come crashing down. Our monetary system and economy for the past 100 years(and 2 months)has been designed to collapse.

And those taxes only fuel that beast called the Fed and causes inflation. Our government is based on taxes, spending, and debt. The only ones who get rich are the ones that have stake in our monetary system...and yes, the Fed is privately owned.

Smart.

If you have any business opportunities take them now! Interest rates are gonna go up.

Makes two of us! My MBA is even in Finance. Free market capitalist here.

Off topic.. but relevant. I believe the education bubble is next. Pepperdine wanted $148,000 for 19 months. for my MBA. I laughed all the way out of her office and left my acceptance letter last year. It's a great school but it isn't worth that.

That's an insane amount to have to pay! I have a close relative who earned his MBA at Pepperdine several years ago. I'll have to ask him how much it cost back then.

That surprises me- I've only been in Oaklawn's casino a few times but was never that impressed. Probably because the games were weird and had a horse race thing associated with them. But out of 4 of us who went last time I was the only one who got carded and I was 40- that's something I won't forget to rub in.

Absolutely! People need to educate themselves regarding these things. And the public libraries are a good source if they can't afford to pay for the information.

We don't need casinos.

Just like with the lottery, the reasoning is a sham. The lottery commission each year cuts what it gives back to education.

The Academic Challenge Scholarship is awarded by the Arkansas Department of Higher Education and funded largely by the lottery. When it started in the 2010-11 school year, the scholarship awarded $5,000 to eligible students attending a four-year college and $2,500 to two-year students.

The next year, the award dropped to $4,500 and $2,250 for new recipients while remaining at the higher level for the first group of students. It stayed the same for 2012-13.

But for the upcoming school year, 2013-14, incoming freshmen at either four-year or two-year schools will receive only $2,000. The scholarship amount for eligible students at four-year schools will increase by $1,000 for each of the next three years, meaning students who make adequate progress toward degrees and maintain the required GPA can get $5,000 a year as seniors.

Each Year the lottery post record profits

2010: $384,000,000
2011: $464,000,000
2012: $473,000,000
