One of the biggest concerns when Malzahn was hired a 14 months ago was what kind of defensive staff could he put together, and how well could they recruit that side of the ball?... it appears, to date, those questions have been answered... especially along the defensive line.

Below is a combined list of 2013/2014 defensive recruits (23 total by my count. could be missing a guy or two):

Defensive Line (3- 5 star/ 5- 4 star/ 2- 3 star)
Monty Adams *****
Carl Lawson *****
Elijah Daniel *****
Justin Thorton ****
Andrew Williams ****
Dont. Russell ****
Dev. Lambert (JUCO) ****
Ben Bradley (JUCO) ****
Raashed Kennion ***
Dev. Lawrence (JUCO) ***

Linebacker (1- 5 star/ 3- 3 star)
Tre Williams *****
Cameron Toney ***
Deshaun Davis ***
Ken Flowers (JUCO) ***

Defensive Back/ Star (4- 4 star/ 5- 3 star)
Nick Ruffin ****
Kalverez Bessent ****
Stephen Roberts ****
Derrik Moncrief (JUCO) ****
Mackenro Alexander ***
Khari Harding ***
Kameron Melton ***
Markell Boston ***
Brandon King (JUCO) ***

I'm excited about the direction of this defense. I like the move to longer/taller DBs and the emphasis on quality depth and rotation up front. Linebackers aren't an emphasis, and the recuiting certainly shows that. Will be interesting to see who all moves around as they develop. Boston could be pegged for the star position down the road, or potential play LB if he continues to grow.

I would like to know how much input CGM has on defensive recruiting. I get the sense that he is pretty hands off as far as defense goes.

Agreed, I like where things are heading with our D. I believe we will be much better moving forward.

Rotating D Line with no drop off, much better LB's (Please Be True), Taller DB's.

just speculation, but I think he lets EJ and the position coaches target whoever they want for their system... and he gets involved with contact from there.

i don't see gus having much say in the evaluation process... but i could be wrong.

I think you are mostly right. I am sure he evaluates the profiles of the kids and gives ultimate approval to offer. He may throw in names of kids he gets a line on, but I suspect he leaves it up to his defensive staff.

Been wanting this type of defensive recruiting for a while now. Very happy about it.

Anyone else find it interesting we recruited offense like bosses under Chizik for the most part. Under Malzahn it is very D heavy?

Yes, especially considering Chizik was a former DC. Didn't really make much sense how bad our secondary was recruited.

Yea I'm pretty surprised to be honest. Our secondary class this year is really good, on paper at least.

I think part of that is under Chiz, our primary recruiting guys were from the offensive side of the ball with Luper and Trooper, so they knew great offensive talent, not so much defensive.
