For real though, I would love to see a competitive Alabama in baseball.

Atlantic 10 Conference baseball coaches have selected Saint Louis to repeat as conference champions in the 2014 preseason poll. The Billikens received 11 of the 12 first place votes and were selected second on the remaining ballot. Saint Louis has won the A-10 regular season in each of the past two years.

The Billikens are coming off of an impressive 2013 where they matched the school record in wins with 41, won the A-10 regular season and tournament titles and made a trip the NCAA Tournament at the Columbia, S.C. Regional. The Billikens return five positional starters, including 2013 A-10 Player of the Year Mike Vigliarolo and NCBWA Freshman All-American Braxton Martinez. Saint Louis also returns Clay Smith and Nick Bates, two weekend starters from last year’s rotation.

The Tide made the NCAAs despite being brutally young last year. Expect more consistency from super sophs SS Mikey White (.287), 2B Kyle Overstreet (.270) and CF Georgie Salem (.270), who are all outstanding gloves. Eight of the nine pitchers back have ERAs under 3.66, including ace LHP Spencer Turnbull (4-3, 3.70) and saves specialist Ray Castillo (12 saves), who is, of course, another sophomore.

Alabama will open the 2014 season ranked No. 21 in the nation by both Baseball America and Perfect Game USA, as announced on Monday morning. The Crimson Tide opens the season on Friday, Feb. 14 against Saint Louis in game one of a three-game series from Sewell-Thomas Stadium. p>
The Tide returns 21 players, including five position starters and four starting pitchers, from the 2013 NCAA Regional squad. Highlighting the list of returners are 2013 freshmen All-Americans Mikey White at shortstop and Ray Castillo on the mound, along with 2013 gold glove second baseman Kyle Overstreet.
Alabama also returns starters in junior right fielder Ben Moore, sophomore center fielder Georgie Salem and sophomore Chance Vincent, who ended the 2013 season as the team’s designated hitter. On the mound, the Tide returns 2013 weekend starters Spencer Turnbull and Justin Kamplain, along with a host of players in the bullpen including, Tucker Hawley, Jay Shaw, Jake Hubbard, Mitch Greet, Jon Keller and Mike Oczypok.

Sucks that Oczypok hurt his elbow. I hope he doesn't miss much time.

Last season's surprise, sophomore walk-on Mike Oczypok, continued to defy odds by pitching very effectively with a less than power arm. Oczypok is one of those guys that just knows how to pitch and to get batters out.
If i'm reading this right, it sounds like he threw in a scrimmage two weeks ago.

That's when he hurt it I'm pretty sure. In a scrimmage last week or a couple weeks ago.

Oh ok, I can't seem to find anything about it yet. Hopefully he comes back quick.

DC Reeves posted a blurb on it in the tide sports forum. That's the only place I read it.

Good news for him - going to rest it a couple weeks and see. May not end up needing Tommy John

@_DCReeves: Update on #Alabama pitcher Mike Oczypok & his injured elbow. Will rest for 2 weeks then see if he's pain free in lieu of surgery for now.

Non conference schedule is pretty weak this year

I think we are going to surprise a lot of people this year. Can't wait to get this thing started

I am very optimistic about this team. I heard Gaspard mentioned Overstreet could be a closer does that Ray will be starter? If so I hope it pays off like Jake Smith and Peanut.

Yea he's moving to the rotation. A few guys have a shot at the closer role, I'd imagine Hubbard has the best shot since it was his before he got hurt last year.

If we find a solid closer and get to move Ray to the rotation I will sincery believe we have a shot at Omaha.
