in the conference. Yeah, I know, we had fewer spots, etc., etc.
Still, quite a tough neighborhood we live in, ain't it?

This is only my second year following recruiting and it sure is disappointing when you kick arse and get all your targets and you are top 10 in the country, then look up and 6 other SEC teams are ahead of you.
I used to think "what's the difference between #4 and #8" but recent stats posted on SECR have shown the SEC winners over the last X number of years all had Top 5 recruiting classes..... Top 5 seems to be the number, statistically, within that last 7 years or so. Who knows how tangible it is, it's just a stat. But it does apply.
EDIT- that top 5 stat was within two years before the champship.....
EDIT #2- UGA's dream team was top 5... and we were 5 yards away from NC in 2012.... another correlation (though not necessarily causation)

Top 10 Nationwide seems to get you a solid shot at the Division (with a couple of years for development), but you're absolutely right - Top 5 is where it's at to be a foregone conclusion that you're going to win the Conference and be a legit contender for the Natty.

A lot of rankings are skewed towards those larger classes; more recruits = more points. That's all well and good except when you don't take a full class. Tennessee was ranked high off of sheer numbers but I'd take our top 12-15 against theirs anyday.
Besides, look at USCjr. 33 wins in the past 3 seasons while finishing 8 or 9 in conference recruiting most years. We bring in plenty of talent but never properly developed it on defense; here's to hoping our new staff reverses the trend of the past decade.

I agree, we need to start getting back into the top 5.
crispy, you're right. Rankings are a function of volume, but also quality. We had a huge class last year and didn't crack the top 10. Hopefully there will be better years ahead.

Bs on crispy. Look at size of our class last year, it actually hurt us in the rankings. Ole miss finished ahead of us with only 17 signees even though our top 17 eclipsed theirs for star power. All of the 3 stars we signed for depth hurt our overall ranking.
EDIT:
I see 247 has ranked by total points which is consistent with what you said.... last year that was not the case.

Dawg fans have NOTHING to hang our heads over this signing period. With limited takes I am VERY pleased how this class finished.

I think the fact Gaillard fell from a 5 star to a 4 star is what kept us out of the top 5.
I haven't done the math yet...

247 Composite ranking is an average of all the sites.
247 ranking is actually weighted towards the top 10 signees. There are more points for more players. But they affect the class ranking in a diminished value the more kids are brought in after the top 10 signees.

I still think it's primarily coaching, developing talent and schedule more than anything else. UGA's got the horses.

About 70 kids get selected to 1st team all-American each year. Since 2007, 67% of those players entered college as a 3-star or less.
It's about coaching.

It is about coaching and training for sure.
That said, the difference in the 2-7 SEC classes is basically 1 or two guys rating...so not much. Now, Alabama just killed everybody. There is no dumbing down that could make their class close to anybody else's.

Exactly. The top 10 schools averaged 24.6 players recruited. We took 21. If we had taken 24 or 25 (the avg # of top 10) we would have finished in the top 5.
The average rating of the quality of our takes brought us to the #5 class with a rating of 90.97.
The teams with higher ratings were:
Alabama-93.68
Ohio State-92.38
LSU-92.33
Texas A&M-91.36
Still some work to do, but with us taking a heavier class (numbers wise) next year we have the potential to easily finish Top 5.

Are you sure about this, Deeprig? I usually agree with you on most stuff...but Mississippi had Tunsil #1 OT, Nkimdichi #1DE, and Treadwell #1 WR....all three of these guys were #1 in the nation at their position and Nkimdeche was the #1 player in the nation overall.
Also, Hooks was the #1 DT in the nation (Junior College) and Brassel was the #1 Athlete in the nation. (Junior College)
They had an incredibly deep class last year. Where we got hurt in the rankings was based upon average points assigned to each kid.
Edit: I just saw where you edited YOUR post I am responding to....sorry.

This wouldn't surprise me a bit. Hope you do the math, as i am curious about that myself!

Based on the Average, and not total points, UGA finished #5 in the country.
Bama, LSU, AnM, Oh St ahead of us. :(
Crap, Deep! Either you have to quit responding, or I have to start reading all the posts before I respond! You beat me to it!

and there really isnt much difference between them as they are usually so close in comparison. Its like choosing playmate of the year. you have to find some faults in order to rank and crown a champ. UGA did well yesterday
