From Auburn 247

quote:

Auburn athletic officials are considering recognizing as many as seven more national championship teams.

“If other schools are using these same polls to declare a national championship, we should at least consider it,” Auburn athletics director Jay Jacobs said. “I don’t think there’s a better time for the Auburn family to consider it than right here at the end of the BCS era.

“As we transition into another playoff format for the national champion, I just think we need to look hard at it.”

The 1910, 1913, 1914, 1958, 1983, 1993 and 2004 teams are all under consideration. Each finished undefeated or won the conference championship, or both. All were recognized as national champions by at least one national selector, which are used by other schools to recognize National Championships.
quote:

“The 2004 team are national champions,” Jacobs said. “I just find it hard for us to not recognize teams in the same manner that sister institutions have given the same criteria.”
quote:

“We’re so competitive. We compare ourselves to other schools,” Jacobs said. “If they’re counting something that we’re not counting, and we’re on equal footing, wouldn’t it be wise to count it.."

1983 and 2004 have legitimate claims. None of the others do

Was that year post 1998..yes?
Did they win the BCS title game that year...no?

Then that team is not the national champion.

By the way, go look at what counted as a "selector" for those days, not to mention how many could be counted retroactively. UGA was #1 in the litkenhous poll in 1927 which is based on nothing but some mathematical formula. We had like 2 or 3 losses that year or something, but we somehow ended up #1 in the math poll. UGA doesn't claim it, because we'd be laughed at if we tried to.

This is just embarrassing on auburn's part.

Alabama could add another 10 if they used the same criteria. The pre-AP ones are all Rose Bowl champion teams. Other than 1941, all the post-AP champions were appointed by either the UPI or AP.

You've got a point. Everybody knows, as you've suggested, that Alabama is the leader in the SEC of most all things athletic.

there is no "we're not as bad as the Bammers"

you either go Bammer or you don't

if you do this Auburn, you're going Bammer

welcome to the club

And can someone clear up for me what exactly "claming" does?

Let's say for instance auburn claims 2004. Ok, the school itself will put it in the media guide, on a flag, on shirts, etc. But nobody else in teh country will recognize it, the NCAA won't recognize it, and USC has the crystal ball. So what does it matter?

I guess the point I'm ultimatley getting at is...what's stopping teams from claiming as many as they want? Like if AU claims 2004, then UGA might as well claim 2013. It would essentially mean the same in the end.

10 was an exaggeration.

Notice how there are only 5 listed for Auburn. That means the selectors are so obscure that even the page that has all selectors doesn't even include them
