This is kind of recruiting related but considering it is mostly about our biggest target left I thought it might merit its own thread.

What of Ellis Johnson's former players that played the Star or players under other coaches who played a similar position have gone on to be drafted?

I know we are selling Rashaan Evans on the position and how he will play it differently than Therezie did this past season. Our opposition has the luxury of selling him on a more sought after NFL position with coaches who have a proven history on putting "Jack LBers" in the league. Just curious how you guys think we are combating that

Simple:

Star position allows you to showcase the following:
Inside LB skills
Outside LB skills
Speed Defensive End skills
Strong side Safety skills
Man - Man coverage on slot WR's - TE's

If you can do any of these great - you will get drafted very high in the NFL draft.

The Star position offers far more opportunities for players to showcase their ability to play multiple positions in the NFL - 3-4, 4-3, nickel etc. Its a no brainer.

Eric Norwood was drafted in the 4th, DeVonte Holloman was drafted in the 6th, and Antonio Allen was drafted in the 7th (the last two draft spots might be flip-flopped, but I can't remember). I think Ellis Johnson also did a lot of stuff with Melvin Ingram at South Carolina. He played linebacker, defensive end, and some defensive tackle.

Melvin Ingram came to mind for me after I posted. I know he was more of a DLineman to Evans LB but its cool to see what impact players can do in Johnson's defense and Evans is definitely going to be a playmaker wherever he goes

Only Holloman and Allen played the "Star" from that list. Norwood started as a DE and later transitioned to the WLB role. Ingram started as a LB and later transitioned to DL.

DJ Swearinger went second round to Houston last year, a year removed from playing Star under Johnson.

Swearinger never played Star. He played both Free and Strong Safety, and played some Corner his senior season to fill injury needs.

The Stars at South Carolina: DeVonte Holloman, Antonio Allen, Darian Stewart.

if you had the talent and size you will be drafted.

I'm aware of that but unfortunately I'm not Rashaan Evans

Here is what Evans' dad had to say about the position per a free Rivals article:
Alan and his son's conversations mostly center around position fit. Alabama and UCLA see Evans excelling as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme, where Auburn sees Evans shining as the "star" in the Tigers' 4-2-5 scheme. "I think that 'star' position is perfect for him," Alan said. "It's a position that allows you to be a dynamic player, which he is. He can play linebacker, he can rush, he can drop in coverage, play man-to-man, play the tight end -- it's a dynamic position for a dynamic player. "But I think Rashaan is comfortable with either position after hearing pitches from all the coaches over the last few weeks." - See more at: LINK

To me, the Star is such a versatile and intriguing position in that it can be tailored to fit the skill set of the player, and then the rest of the defensive backfield sort of adapts to that skill set. I think our D would have looked a lot different had Garrett not gotten hurt from the times that Therezie was in there.
