Fried Chicken: Willie Mae's Scotch House
Cajun: Original Pierre Maspero's
Fine Dining: Commander's Palace

These are my favorite places in New Orleans

I was there this past weekend, had drinks at The Marigny Brasserie & Bar on Frenchman's St. Cool drink selection, didn't have any food. Also, although not in New Orleans proper, you could go to R&O's in Metarie for a damn good Po'Boy and debris fries.

Rusty Nail is the only bar I really go to down there anymore.

I highly recommend getting there at 11 o'clock. We went at 11 and we got right in. When we left, there was a line down the block

I'll third Cochon.

Hit up Casamentos for oysters. It's at Magazine and Napoleon Uptown.

Root was a really fun experience if some strange things on the menu won't bother you.

Somebody else mentioned Commander's Palace. If you want New Orleans/Creole style food done really well, that's your place.

Port Of Call on Esplanade for burgers.

That's just a fraction of the good food options you have.

ETA: Start a thread on the Food board asking where to go. Plenty of NOLA locals who will certainly steer you in the right direction.

Port O Call is great, but if the line is too long, you can try Buffa's a block or so up from it. Also, try Muriel's on the square for lunch, their crawfish crepes are great.

Also, if you are doing the tourist thing and going to the French Market, go in the morning before it gets too busy and grab a bloody mary from the Organic Banana....best in the Quarter imho.

I wouldn't make a special trip there, but if you're on Magazine in the Garden District and are hungry and notice Juan's Flying Burrito, it is really good.

But there's also a really good Po Boy place a couple of blocks away that the name is escaping me at the moment.

That name rings a bell, but I want to say this one was in almost a convenience store or small market. It may even be further than a couple of blocks. Domicile's maybe? Or something like that. My buddy used to live walking distance from Juan's, and seems we always hit that po boy place.

Domilise's makes a damn fine po-boy. I'm sure that's the place you're thinking of.
