On the downside now we have to endure another couple weeks of flaming about it

Does anyone know how this works? Do we get paid per week? What about the building with the '12' lit in the offices? Someone better motherfricking be on top of that owner to pay up.

it's a flat amount annually and the amount is almost meaningless. However

Texas A&M's licensing agreement with Seattle does not allow the production of #12thMan apparel or other items.

Exactly. $5000.
But I'm fine, knowing that they know they stole a tradition.
And each year when they write that check, they're reminded of it.

I kind of want to pretend it is a huge payout, but it really isn't. It is more of a proprietary trademark thing.

Wtf. 5k? Jesus. That's basically pointless. Sure, the seahawk organization might be aware they stole it, but the fans don't know or care. I thought at least a&m was getting a lot of money for getting fricked over. Ags are definitely getting fricked on this.

It's not pointless at all. We didn't protect the trademark. If we fought them, we might have lost it altogether. By settling, it sets precedent that we own it and to use it you must license it through us. This limits any other use without our permission and would make another legal case a slam dunk.
Also, it's sort of odd, but the more it's talked about, the more it allows us to interject ourselves into a conversation which we wouldn't normally be part of. We hammered twitter yesterday on it and raised awareness of the Texas A&M brand. It's marketing 101. I doubt someone like Jason Cook would ever say so publicly, but it's a marketing bonanza for us.

Actually I'm pretty sure he said almost the exact thing you just said at one point last year. It gets our brand name talked about during NFL football games and at other times when we wouldn't be mentioned normally.
While 5k may be small, we are basically being paid by Seattle for them to advertise our brand.

#12thMan Twitter posts yesterday gladdened me greatly

frick it, I'm celebrating

My point is that if you asked a regular guy what the 12th man is, they're probably much more likely to associate it with seattle.
Also, it would be pretty sweet if it was free marketing, but I haven't once heard a&m mentioned alongside seattle when discussing their 12th man.
Just my feelings on it. Thought ags were getting straight paid.
I understand from a licensing standpoint that it's a major win, but how much money is a&m making from that?

Hmmmm...that's a bit surprising. The best thing we have going for us on this is the faux outrage. It encourages students and former students to do the guerrilla marketing for us.
Btw, it's too damn expensive but how great would it be to see a Texas A&M 12th Man commercial during the SB!

That's where you and I come in. Your 12th man duties don't stop at the internet! Anytime the "12th Man" of Seattle is mentioned, it's your duty as an Aggie to pronounce as loudly and as obnoxiously as possible that it's our name and that Seattle pays us for the name!

I should have clarified that he said this on TexAgs so it wasn't a public statement or tweet.
