Pretty dominating fashion thus far....8-0 Yardcocks lead in the bottom 4th. Montgomery was reported to be looking in All-American form heading into the season, and he hasn't done anything to dispel that. I know Bucknell isn't the toughest season-opening opponent to face, but you expect a top-10 program to route them, and we're routing them thus far. Let's keep it up!

Press Conferences up from today.

Coach Holbrook
Montgomery
KMart
Greiner
Arendas

all included.

Quotes from Pressers:

DC, he’ll give you a good at-bat and that’s why I DH’ed him today. He deserved to play today. He has a knack for giving you a good at-bat. A big swing of the bat, went with the pitch on a single to left field. He had some good at-bats all day long I thought, even the ones he made outs on. - head coach Chad Holbrook

I’m thankful the coaches gave me an opportunity today. I wanted to take advantage of the opportunity. I was able to get the ball in the air. To say the wind help was an understatement, but we’ll take it. - sophomore DC Arendas

It’s a good feeling for us when we score 29 runs and I didn’t think Joey or Max were their normal selves today. They were just missing some pitches, fouling stuff back. That makes me feel good about the team we can be offensively. When we get those guys going offensively, I think we’ll be even more formidable. - head coach Chad Holbrook

We’re pretty confident in our 1 through 9. I feel like we also have some depth. The middle of our order, we feel like we can drive the ball in some gaps and over the fence. We have some guys at the top and the bottom who can run, so we have some options. We have some guys who can drive it out of the park. To get out here the first day and put up some of the numbers we put up, that’s more confidence for us and we’re going to try to carry it over to tomorrow. - junior catcher Grayson Greiner

For the first time out, first start of the year, it was OK. That’s how spoiled I am watching him pitch. He was solid, he was good, but Jordan has been a lot better than he was today. I think he’ll be the first to tell you that. He hung a couple of pitches, pitched up in the strike zone more than he usually does, but he was still Jordan Montgomery. You can’t look at his line and complain, but he struggled there a little bit from time to time with his command. - head coach Chad Holbrook on Jordan Montgomery

I’ve been working on a cutter for a while. Last year, it was a get-me-over slider. I kind of threw it a little harder. It’s about an 84 mph cutter. I threw it to a lot of lefties and into righties, so it’s something else to look for. - junior pitcher Jordan Montgomery discussing his new cutter

Jack got comfortable the last inning. I thought he pitched the best the last two innings, but he was at his pitch count. I thought he settled in when he got comfortable, and that was encouraging to see. Hopefully that will carry over into his next start. - head coach Chad Holbrook on Jack Wynkoop

Any victory is a good victory. Hitting is contagious and we showed that today. The confidence level just kept going up. It made seeing pitches a lot easier. - junior first baseman Kyle Martin

It was a good day for our team. It was an exciting day. Our players were a little bit anxious and maybe a tad nervous during batting practice today. That’s to be expected, but we settled down and played OK. All in all, it was a good day. We have a lot to shore up as well. We’re sitting here 2-0 and we feel pretty good. - head coach Chad Holbrook

Vogel has a great arm and had a bad day. He had a bad day but we’ll put him right back out there. - head coach Chad Holbrook

King did a good job with the video. I thought he was also going to make one for Shaw and for the Cap One Bowl. Although I understand he doesn't get paid for those so it's all on his time/dime. I think the baseball team probably paid him for this one.

Awwweeeee shite! Will Crowe can pitch!!! 6.1 innings, 0 runs, 0 hits, and 5 SO's. The defense was on point today, but Crowe didn't really give them anything to connect solidly with.

I'm impressed, that's a great game for the 1st game of a true freshman.

This was some of the best Sunday pitching I've seen from us in over a year.

Crowe didn't give them anything easy to hit, he had 5 SO's.

Mincy pitched 1 inning and got 2 SO's, then Seddon came in and pitched another inning and got 2 SO's. We gave up 0 runs and only 1 hit and 1 walk the whole game. WOW, now that's the type of Sunday pitching that's going to be clutch when we get into SEC play.

My confidence in the team just kicked up a notch after the performance this weekend. They've been to the NCAA tournament a couple times recently. Last year they weren't a tournament team, but they returned a good amount of starters.

We just dominated every game this weekend.

We outscored 'em 41-6.
We out hit 'em 39-18
We committed fewer errors 1-6.
We have some good hitters on the team, to many to mention, our OB% is going to be solid.
Our batters had 18 SO's to Buck's 32.

We were supposed to win this series and we did, but I thought we did it in a very convincing fashion.

GamecocksOnline has Holbrook, Schrock/Kmart, & Crowe Pressers.

Quotes from Pressers:

I guess the story of the game was Wil Crowe and the way he threw the ball. It was impressive to sit in the dugout and watch him. He had command of the strike zone with all his pitches and threw very, very well. - head coach Chad Holbrook

I try to block everything out, go out there and throw strikes. I felt like I had some good stuff. I was trying to do my best. I tried to throw strikes and command the zone and not have to worry about much. - freshman right-handed pitcher Wil Crowe

It was flawless. He has a presence about him that exudes confidence. He’s had it ever since he stepped on campus. The kid believes in himself. You hate to put expectations on a freshman or a young kid, but when we recruited him, we thought he had the chance to be a special pitcher here. I hope that rings true. I’m lucky we’ve got him three years. He’s got to continue to get better. He’ll get knocked off his perch, and I look forward to seeing how he responds to that, too. - head coach Chad Holbrook on Crowe’s performance

In the fall and spring, he always had great command and great control. He’s a great competitor and great pitcher. He likes to work off of his fastball. His confidence is excelling right now. - junior first baseman Kyle Martin on Crowe’s performance

I didn’t suspect that but I did think that we had a chance to have some good offensive players in the lineup. When I put the starters on the team last weekend, we scored nine runs both of those scrimmages. I do feel good about our offensive team. We can be pretty old with the lineup we put on the field as far as experience. You need to be old in this league. - head coach Chad Holbrook on how offensive his team was opening weekend

The last two games, I put a little pressure on myself. Coach Buscher is so good at talking to you and relating. I have to give him some credit for that home run. - sophomore second baseman Max Schrock on Brian Buscher’s guidance after the doubleheader

It was just a really clean game for our team. I couldn’t be more proud of them. We pride ourselves in trying to play the best game of the weekend on Sunday and I think we did that. - head coach Chad Holbrook

I was very impressed with the way our bullpen threw the ball. We do have some depth and do have some talent in our bullpen. What I take away as a coach, that makes me feel pretty good that we have a number of guys we can go to after our starters. - head coach Chad Holbrook

I want Joey to play more third base and he will be in there from time to time. I told Joey he has to hang in there with me. His versatility allows us to get more offensive guys in our lineup. We’re very comfortable with the way DC plays defense. (Joey) is going to play some in left and some at third. He’s not going to be our every day left fielder. He’s an infielder by trade and he’s become a darn good third baseman. There are times I want Taylor (Widener) to hit. It’s too difficult for me to DH DC all the time knowing one of our better infielders is DH’ing. That’s not smart coaching. Joey allows us to put our best defensive team on the field from time to time and get another hitter in there. His versatility is making my job a little easier. - head coach Chad Holbrook

Crowe Brilliant in Debut

Free Article.

quote:

True freshman. Opening Weekend. First start. Big crowd.

Perfection.

Welcome to the Wil Crowe era of South Carolina baseball.

The freshman from Sevierville, Tenn., allowed no hits over 6.1 innings of work and struck out five in No. 7 South Carolina's 12-0 win over Bucknell to earn the series sweep Sunday at Carolina Stadium.

A crowd of 7,512 gave Crowe a standing ovation when he was lifted after retiring the first batter in the seventh. Demonstrating a command of several pitches and mixing speeds ranging from the 90s to the 70s, Crowe looked comfortable from the outset and improved as the game went on. He faced the minimum number of hitters in four of six innings and his only blemishes were a hit batter in the second and a walk in the third.

South Carolina (3-0) coach Chad Holbrook said he couldn't recall a more impressive first start by a freshmen in his 21-year coaching carer.

"I don't really remember one as impressive as that," Holbrook said. "It was flawless."

"He has a mentality, he has a presence about him that exudes confidence. He had it when we saw him pitch in high school and he's had it ever since he stepped on campus. He believes in himself. You hate to put expectations on a freshman or a young kid, but when we recruited him we thought he had a chance to be a special pitcher here."

Some interesting facts from this past weekend's games:

https://southcarolina.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1610843#sthash.d08VANbQ.dpbs

-- Kyle Martin was USC's leading hitter for the weekend with a .778 average (7-for-9), four RBI and six runs scored. His weekend included a career-high four hits in Sunday's 12-0 victory when he went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI.

-- Bucknell had just one runner reach second base and none reach third base when Crowe was on the mound during his 6.1 innings. Crowe retired 13 consecutive Bucknell batters before exiting when he reached his pitch count.

-- Tanner English registered his eighth career triple on Saturday, putting him eighth on USC's all-time list. The school record for career triples is 13 held by Michael Campbell (2003-06). Only four USC players have reached double digits in triples.

-- Schrock tied a school record with four walks in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader. He added two stolen bases in the nightcap and homered in Sunday's series finale.

-- USC's three double-digit run totals is the first time since 1987 that the Gamecocks reached double digits in runs in all three games of a series.

Well, Britt didn't give up any runs, so that's alright. Our bats are very quiet here in the 1st half. Lots of PO's though.
