Stats indicate that victory favors the team that attempts every 4th down

Why hasn't a bold and brave college coach attempted this strategy yet?
It's working wonders in the high school circuit. No reason to believe that this strategy wouldn't be successful in the college ranks.

Really? Name 10 schools that always attempt 4th down conversions and produce "working wonders" results.

I can name one. That school is in Arkansas and is a state champion

don't raw stats show that about 50% of fourth downs succeed?
pretty sure giving the ball to the other team a lot more per game is going to suck.
and high school is different, teams that go for it on fourth down all the time beat their opponents by like 40-50 points on the reg. that shite doesn't happen at the college level.

Pulaski Academy never punts. And they win

Well hell...that certainly proves the point. One becomes the rule as opposed to the exception. DUH !

I'm telling you, this will happen in college football sooner than later with incredible results.
It will be the college version of "moneyball"

Not even in the same galaxy.
"Moneyball" was all about getting maximum value for actual dollars by finding undervalued players that maximized on base percentage.
You're talking about tactics on the field of play.
An analogy to baseball might be whether it is better to lay down a bunt or slug away in a given situation. It's a question of tactics based on statistical analysis.
But it's not "moneyball" because it has nothing to do with money. It's about making the best decisions on each play (or at bat) with the resources you already have on the roster.

Some of it is due to field position (risk vs. reward). A lot of it is due to coaches not going for it on 4th unless they are more certain than not they'll get it. Most 4th down decision to go for it happen when there are only inches, half-yard, or a yard to go.

If you punt you turn the ball over to the other team close to 100% of the time.
If you go for it on 4th down and make it half the time.. you've just stopped half the possessions of your opponent.
Pulaski Academy also onside kicks it every single time on basically the same principle.
It's likely a sound strategy if you toss in a few adjustments where it's statistically less likely to make a first down or where there's extra room for punting.
Figure you should ALWAYS go for it on the opponent's side of the field and you should always go for it at 4th and 3 or less. Inside your own 30 don't go for more than that... from the 30 to the 50 go for it at 4th and 7 or less.

What happens if both teams run this tactic? Who wins?
Posted on 1/15/14 at 7:09 pm to LSUFOREVERAMEN
The better team obviously

4 and 3 or shorter, I would go for if I'm past my own 40 and have a good offense.
