Friend of mine is headed down to Mobile to run the marathon tomorrow.

Any recommendations for where to eat dinner in Mobile?

Only restaurant in Mobile I recall eating at (name totally escapes me) was a Joe's Crab Shack type seafood restaurant that had these awesome paper place mats that gave a cartoonish map of the USA from the Mobile perspective. I still have the place mat somewhere in my garage because I thought it was pretty funny at the time. That was 15 years ago and I can't find the place on Urbanspoon so I wonder if they went out of business.

Urbanspoon Mobile

There's a good jumping off point. You can search by area of town and everything. Where are you going to be staying? I can help guide you from there.

Can't go wrong on the Causeway.

And where do you want to eat? Downtown, Midtown, Springhill, West Mobile. etc?

I'm guessing seafood restaurant a reasonable drive in and around downtown. Spanish Fort would probably be as far as he'd want to venture out.

I'm not going to tell him to drive out to Foley for throwed rolls.

I'm a lot more familiar with Orange Beach and Gulf Shores and haven't eaten much in Mobile.

Checked Urbanspoon but nothing really jumped out at me.

Any place on the Causeway is good, but Felix's is more formal than the other - R&R, Blue Gill, Ed's, Tacky Jack's, Oyster House are all great. In town, NoJa, Spot of Tea, Legacy Grill, Osman's are all excellent.

Felix's

One of my favorite places to eat pretty much anywhere. After that on the causeway I would go to OOH.

Spot of Tea is pretty good for breakfast/brunch, but that's all I've had there. Wintzell's downtown is pretty good.

I went there in October. It was great. Really satisfied my craving for oysters..... For a few days at least.

To be honest the only thing I ever get there is the oyster sampler. 4 oysters on the half shell done 5 different ways. Greatness.

Pretty much what we did too.

We did get like an additional 3 dozen raw as well.

I was a little turned off by the bacon cheddar version though.

Man I could eat oysters for days.

I will say that the bacon cheddar one is probably my least favorite. The spinach and parmesan has to be one of the top though.

I was at Felix's back in October and they had these BBQ'd oysters on the specials menu, they were incredible.

Well, my friend flew back home today and I forgot to check my trap, er, thread in time to help him out.

But now I know some good places to eat in the Mobile area. Lot more likely I'll be back down that way before he will. Just a few hours down I-10 from my briar patch.

Felix's is really good food. They have a crab soup that is wonderful.

Spot of tea downtown is really good as well but they don't serve dinner.

And if you are in the mood for "fast" food, try the Dew Drop Inn on Old Shell Rd, possibly my favorite hot dog joint of all time.

All of this, except Tacky Jack's. It's mediocre at best.

Peronsally, I'd avoid the Causeway unless you're just hell bent on staring at 6" deep water while you eat.

I'd go with Legacy, NoJa or Osman's in town if you're willing to spend a little bit and want exceptional food.

It's not fine dining, but I also spend a lot of time at the Bicycle Shop downtown.

In midtown, I'd suggest True Midtown Kitchen or the Kitchen on George.

ETA: Just realized how old this thread is. What a waste of 30 seconds.
