Of course everyone wants to know more on how the 12 newcomers look and early returns

quote:

But honestly, the phrase we heard no less than three times this week from different people best sums up this newcomers: "It's a new level around here. These aren't like guys that have been around here in a while. No disrespect to anyone else, but this is just a different level of prospect coming in. It's ability, confidence, swagger, attitude, all that."

On Hurd, Malone, and Pearson

quote:

However, there's no denying the athletic ability of the new skill guys from Jalen Hurd to Josh Malone and to Lavon Pearson. Suffice to say, the Vols are more athletic today as a receiving corps than any point last season.

On Pig and Devrin

quote:

Also, we wouldn't be surprised this spring if a guy like Devrin Young or Pig Howard doesn't work at different positions to try and add some depth and versatility to the offense as it grows in its second year. The newfound depth and potential explosiveness at the wide receiver position helps make this possible.

On the TEs

quote:

At the tight end position, as one source put it to Volquest this week, the upgrade in simply adding two bodies made the position better. But it's more than just added bodies. Ethan Wolf arrived with good size and looks to be a guy who can be physical early in his career and Daniel Helm is a guy that athletically looks to be able to add a different dimension to the passing game. Remember, too, Brendan Downs has been on crutches so it's going to be a ton of reps and opportunities for the new guys.

On LB Jakob Johnson

quote:

Defensively, Jakob Johnson is that guy just commanding an early buzz. Johnson is a physical specimen, coming in right around 6-3 and 230 pounds.

On DBs D'Andre Payne & Emmanuel Moseley

quote:

D'Andre Payne has shown good early athleticism; it will be interesting to see if he can potentially be a factor at perhaps nickleback. Emmanuel Moseley has appeared incredibly explosive. Moseley's challenge will be to get his weight up and prove durable, but he's an instant boost to the athleticism in the Vols' secondary, we're told

I'm curious if Johnson keeps beefing up, do they move him to DE like with Vereen last year? Off season has some legs to it this year

Big injection of talent, and speed.

Players with significant PT in Secondary for 2013:
S - Brian Randolph - 3*
S - LaDarrel McNeil - 4*
CB - Justin Coleman - 3*
CB - Cameron Sutton - 3*
NB - Jaron Toney - Walk on
NB - Devaun Swafford- Walk on
NB/S - Max Arnold - Walk on

Depth chart for secondary for 2014:

S - Brian Randolph - 3*
S - LaDarrel McNeil - 4*
S - Todd Kelly Jr. - 4*
S - Cortez McDowell - 4*
S(?)- Evan Berry - 4*
S(?)- Elliot Berry - 3*
S - RaShaan Gaulden - 3*
CB - Cameron Sutton - 3*
CB - Justin Coleman - 4*
CB - Riyahd Jones - 3* (Back from injury)
CB - Mike Williams - 3* (Track Transfer)
CB - D'Andre Payne - 4*
CB - Emmanuel Moseley - 3*
CB/NB - Malik Foreman - 3*
NB - Devuan Swafford - Walk on
NB/S - Max Arnold - Walk on
NB - Jaron Toney - Walk on

Starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel hopefully

I would be surprised if,

CB/NB - Malik Foreman - 3*
NB - Devuan Swafford - Walk on
NB/S - Max Arnold - Walk on
NB - Jaron Toney - Walk on

every play again, outside of ST. Probably solid guys, I just don't see them beating out any of the freshmen or current starters with the extreme lack of speed and open field tackling

I am honestly expecting Kelly to be starting at SS by mid season if McNeil looks anything like he did last year.

I'm also interested to see how R.Jones looks. There was a lot of talk before he got injured about him being the #2 CB and moving Coleman's arse inside to nickel which would be the best place to put him.

I wouldnt be surprised if this is the two deep next year

CB Sutton/ Evan Berry
FS Randolph/ McDowell
SS Kelly Jr./ McNeil
CB Jones/ Williams
NB Coleman/ Payne

Kelly is a game changer, I'd love to see him at SS and wreck the run game. I'm more uncertain of a starting lineup outside of Randolph and Sutton then I've ever been. Positive though
