I think this deserves it own thread. DIAF if you don't. Cliffs for the TL;DR crowd: The SEC is the historically best conference of the modern era.
The SEC is not down. The SEC is and has been the best conference by the numbers. With the exception of the PAC in the 2000s (and the Big East, but no one GAF), the SEC has been a statistically better conference since the 1980s than everyone. No conference can touch the SEC's H2H record vs. every other major conference. It isn't even close. THE SEC HAS A WINNING RECORD VS ALL MAJOR CONFERENCES SINCE 1990.
This is even with the SEC having a total of 10 bowl tie ins, of which only ONE has an equal seed (CapOne: B1G #2 vs SEC #2), and NONE have SEC favorable seeds. The largest margins are a 3 seed gap for the Chicken bowl, a 3 seed gap for the Advocare bowl, and a SEVEN seed gap for the Music City.
Is the SEC down this year? No. The SEC has a 61.7% win percentage this year. Last year was 62.0%. 2011 was 62.6%. That's the difference of a single game.
SEC record winning percentage All Time vs. other conferences:
Sun Belt 93.9
WAC 86.6
MAC 85.7
Conference USA 83.1
Independents 68.1
ACC 67.0
PAC 12 62.4
Mountain West 61.1
American Athletic 60.0
Big 10 59.6
Southwest 57.9
Big 12 54.4
Big East 46.3 (WTF?)

Good post. Some of the cliffjumpers around here should take note.

Because Overall records have any impact on a conference being down for a season.

So you're saying the SEC is the best football conference? Interdasting.

The SEC didn't win the NC = the SEC is down

Exactly.
If you can't see the SEC is down then you haven't watched SEC football the past couple of years. We're still probably the best conference but we weren't as good this year as in the past.

The SEC lost last year to UL, Northwestern and Clemson in the bowls.
The SEC lost this year to FSU, Nebraska, and OU.
You have to go all the way back to 2002 to find a year the SEC didn't have a winning record in the bowls. No other conference even comes close. Contrast the ACC which only has FIVE years of positive records since 2002.

When the bowls that matter are losses and the ones that dont matter are wins the SEC is considered down. It's just how it goes. Is it right? No, but it does help to portray that perception for the national image. "Only reason Okla and FSU won the BCS bowls is because the SEC was down"

Haven't looked up the numbers, so I don't know, but...
We have 3 teams in the top 5
We have 4 teams in the top 10
We have 7 teams (1/2 of the conference) in the top 25
Is that down compared to other years? Or, is the perception that we're down because some of those ranked aren't the usual teams? if it's the latter, I don't see that as the conference being down - I see it as confirmation of the conference's overall strength. While a traditional power may have an off year, other teams may be stronger, and worthy of a high ranking - that says the conference, overall, is still far and away the best.
In other words, certain teams may have had an off year, but the conference itself isn't suffering as a result. Other teams in the conference are strong, and keeping the conference's rankings and level of competition high.
