Damn ... if ever there was a game to show in the film room to illustrate the importance of special teams - Monday night was it.
Missed chip shot FG ... could'a used those three pts.
Roughing the kicker ... automatic 1st down that led to a score.
Allowed the fake punt ... totally changed momentum, led to another score.
Failure to cover the KO ... led to another score.
I cannot remember a game, ever where there were what, 24 pts allowed the opposing team directly related to poor special teams play.
SCAR had special team issues all season .... then we caught a couple of breaks against Clemson ... but, well, as they say ST is a solid 1/3rd of the game.
Aubirn should'uv won that game.

Our special teams have been rock solid all year. It wasn't the worst case scenario last night, Clark saved that with some nice punting, but it pretty much cost us the game.

We won a few games this year on special teams and ours bit our arse last night for sure. Still proud of how the defense played last night, they did about everything that could be asked out of them until our offense sputtered and kept the on the field a long time.
Still shocked that Jernigan didn't get defensive player of the game, dude is bad arse.

Are you really ... "proud of how (your) defense played Monday night?"
I mean they lit it up early - did a great job. And what I am suggesting is in no way a knock on the players or their competitiveness. But from where we were sitting, a group of friends and I in my TV room watching that game ... we all remarked that your D would fold if FSU went to their quick passing game. We used to see it all the time when Ellis Johnson was our DC. That little "hang on to your hats - here comes EJ's mini prevent ..." and it never failed, our D would give-up points.
Be happy that Bobby Petrino is gone from Arkansas because y'all wouldn't be able to stand what EJ does against a Petrino coached team. And we had future NFL CBs, Safeties, DEs, etc., but EJ could not stop a decent passing team.
Still yet, it was special teams that cost y'all that FSU game. Without the special teams errors, y'all win going-away.
Your punter did a helluva job though.

2009 Ala vs Tex. There are usually more mistakes when playing on that big of a stage. The ones that I remember-
Bama muffed two pooch kick-offs
Fake punt attempt intercepted.
Ricochet kickoff off Smelly's butt
Due to penalty Texas had six attempts to score inside of five yard line and ended up settling for FG.
These games typically have mistakes and many occur on ST plays.

You're right to some degree, and I remember a couple of those you just cited.
So we can put what I was trying to suggest another way then I guess.
FSU won because they played much better on special teams than did Auburn.
Lookit - who can deny that the game was won by one team, and lost by the other, because of special teams play.

hard to argue any of that. weird since special teams had been good all year. worst part is our kicker had put 90% of his kickoffs out of the endzone all year but couldnt this 1 game. I swear I think Chris Davis had money on FSU the way he played.

SECCG was a good showcase, too. Bama missed, what, 4 FGs? Then had one of them returned for the game winning TD.

quote:Yeah, as much respect I have for Ellis Johnson, he was absolutely awful against Petrino. CBP handed his arse to him every time. Maybe it's because of the way EJ jumped to USCe after Petrino hired him when he first came to Arkansas. I have no problem with EJ doing that--he had good reasons--but I don't doubt that Petrino held a grudge.

Special teams had nothing, 0, to do with winning drive. It was Auburn's game to lose at that juncture.

There were a ton of things that we didn't do well Monday night. It wasn't one of our better games.

It was just a slug fest. Sure the defense needed a stop, but the defense played great all night. Sure the offense needed to put the game away but when the game was on the line they came through.
But as Jimbo said, if Auburn stops the fake punt, we could've gone into halftime 28-3 and the game was over. [except Auburn fans know to wait til 0:00 AND the refs have left the field].
But special teams were undisciplined, unlucky and incapable all night and that points towards coaching.

I don't think it was coaching. We just didn't have a good night. It happens.

Well, I think special teams were incredible against UT. So much so UGA freaked out and did some sort of weird kickoff to start that game and it benefited us. But as the night wore on UGA realized our special teams weren't that special that night.
But then came the Bama game and a blocked FG, the return and the punts were awesome. For the Mizzou game it wasn't a factor. But getting out of position on the fake punt and kickoff, that shouldn't be happening, no?

I thought we had a guy pull a hammy on the kickoff return, but I haven't seen anything on tv. I just remembered seeing someone pull up limping at the game. Yeah, I guess not stopping the fake punt was bad.

I saw that too ... but your guy was way over at the line of scrimmage and just getting-up by the time the return was long pass him down the sidelines. I remember Brent or Herbie, one of them, making a big deal out of it but your guy never had a chance to make a play in the first place.

Jones pulled his hammy but the return came in his an Flowers gaps and Flowers was 10-15 yards inside of his gap responsibility.
