Billingsley Report: Bama overtakes Michigan as #2

All-Time Top Program in college football
by TerryP Published on 12-29-2013

If you've followed the computer rankings of the BCS you are certainly familiar with the name Richard Billingsley.

For those who aren't familiar with his rankings or methods Billingsley does use a computer formula but is careful to point out he's neither a computer geek or a mathematician—he say's "I'm just a football fan."

The main components in the formula are: Won-Loss Records, Opponent Strength (based on the opponent’s record, rating, and rank), with a strong emphasis on the most recent performance. Very minor consideration is also given to the site of the game, and defensive scoring performance.

His rankings, a part of the College Football Research Center, are in its 44th year tracking statistical data regarding college football. Alabama's recent success has moved the program past Ohio State and Michigan in its rankings over the past few seasons.

How close is the program to catch current #1, Notre Dame? Here's more on the 2013 rankings:

Crimson Tide Rolling in Billingsley Report
For the first time in the 44 year history of the College Football Research Center, the Michigan Wolverines are not the #2 All-Time Top Program in the Billingsley Report. On the strength of 3 National Championships in the last 4 years the Alabama Crimson Tide have surged slightly ahead of Michigan. From 1970-1977 the top 3 programs were Notre Dame, Michigan and Ohio State. Alabama leaped the Buckeyes to claim the #3 spot in 1980 after Bear Bryant led Alabama to a remarkable run of great teams in the 1970’s, capped by their 4th Billingsley title in 1979.

Notre Dame remains as the #1 overall top rated program in college football history with 268.934 points to Alabama’s 267.360. Changes in Billingsley’s Top Programs are rare as the data is an average of 143 years of ratings. Should Alabama continue their surge and the Irish falter a few seasons, projections indicate Alabama could overtake Notre Dame in 4 to 5 years. Notre Dame’s performance in 2012 however, allowed the Irish to keep pace with Alabama’s upward movement.

In other notable moves, Florida State jumped from #12 to #11 (over Penn State) and Texas A&M made the biggest move among the Top 25 Programs jumping from #19 to #17. The razor thin tight race between #5 Oklahoma, #6 Texas, and #7 Nebraska remains heated although the Longhorn’s slump in the last three years, couple with the Sooners three Top 10 finishes has allowed Oklahoma to increase their lead ever so slightly.

Minnesota above Florida, A&M, Miami?

From Wikipedia:
quote:

After their 8–2 record in 1967, the Gophers would not win 8 games in a season again until they went 8–4 in 1999.

Haven't won a conference championship since that 1967 season.

South Carolina must have had a lot of bad seasons before joining the SEC. Based on their recent seasons I would think they would be higher. Being an old Big 8 fan I know Ok St's story, they were horrible until recently. What I didn't realize was SC was similar.

Another shitty off-season thread for sure, but it at least served as a reminder of the USCe's sterling historical performance.

Remember the Gamecocks are 7-12 bowls all time. Spurrier is responsible for them appearing in 8 of those bowls by himself. The Gamecocks didn't get their first bowl win until 1995. I bet South Carolina's rival's can't wait until Spurrier retires so they can return to the original status quo.

Given the importance of 'recency' these rankings use I'm sure we've taken a hit due to that trojan horse you sent us. Dooley was the most brilliant play UGA has ever mustered against us and we were indeed fooled by his mother's Oscar-worthy performance claiming to support her baby wherever he was paired with Vince's feigned reluctance. It was hard to avoid the hypnotic effects of Junior's perfect hair but his strange obsession showering followed by his odd reenactment of Normandy and cry of "where's Rommel? where's Rommel?" that compared us to German Army rather than the Allies followed by a quick apology to the Germans and assurances that he wasn't attacking the German Army were the first clues. These things were nonsensical and enigmatic to us then but like the evil Army he referenced the Dooley Enigma Code was broken and the message deciphered. Sadly, we didn't realize in time the real reason he was obsessed with forcing us into 'proper' showers and demanding to know the location of Rommel was because Dooley had begun the process of implementing UGA's 'Final Solution to the Volunteer Question.' In what he insisted om calling "Year Zero" which turned out to be a reference to Pol Pot's takeover of Cambodia that resulted in a death toll of over 2 million people over 4 years and began the process of complete destruction of all culture and tradition so that a new 'revolutionary' government could replace it Junior was cracking under the pressure of not having been sent reinforcements. LINK

Barbara was once again called in to distract us and make sure we remained merely confused by her son eccentricities rather than suspicious of his references to two of the most evil regimes in history responsible for two of the most heinous and costly genocides the world has known.

He became more and more obvious as time passed. After losing to Georgia in 2011 he said we were bamboo and water and bamboo gets watered watered and watered and the ZHOOOM! just shoots up and that this was all he could tell us and he'd imparted this wisdom to his team. He followed that up by refusing to allow the team to watch game film of Arkansas slaughtering us. Instead of film that might show them what they did wrong and help them learn he had an assistant aided by a dolly wheel out a heavy ceramic dog onto the practice field and babbled on about feeding the red dog or feeding the orange dog and told the team to not feed the red dog of negativity but the orange dog of positive thinking for this would surely prepare them to win against Vanderbilt. This convinced even those who desperately want to believe that Dooley was utterly off his rocker.

He wasn't incompetent or evil but merely a mad man who'd lost it like every other SEC game he'd coached that year. He'd begun 2011 by plastering "OPPORTUNITY IS NOWHERE" on the doors and yet now he was telling players not to watch film and instead feed the orange dog in order to be positive. We were angry yet enthralled by the sheer spectacle of the train wreck we were witnessing.

2012 was just as bizarre and Dooley finally removed all doubt regarding his true mission when with plenty of time to score and win the game (and very much within scoring distance) he inexplicably ordered Tyler Bray to run out the clock and throw the game into over time. TB exploded with rage and Mizzou won the game in OT we were blessedly relieved. He'd done it openly - flat out quit during the game. Finally we could fire him and did so as the team that had grown to loathe him allowed Vandy to beat them in the most spectacular way possible without bothering to pretend they gave shite. Tyler Bray gave him such a big frick you that Dooley actually benched him.

Mizzou had rid Tennessee of the wannabe Pol Pot destroyer of football and enabled them to start their guerilla war against him during the Vandy game - the last he would coach, as OC Jim Chaney took the reins for UK.

It was a great plan and damaged us badly but alas he's gone and Richt has lost control of UGA's master plan

I sincerely hope the papers that you have written in college do not read in the same fashion, Prof. I was ready to stick a fork in my eyes by the second paragraph.
