We talk all the time about the difficulty of maintaining a program. It is far easier to build it than continue the success for years on end. Well, for Alabama that time has truly arrived. The final members of the 2008 and 2009 recruiting classes have left. Those men came to Alabama with dreams of building a program. There was no entitlement or expectations. They worked hard to build what Alabama is now. To make Alabama a household name again.

The current make-up of the roster are kids that have grown a little entitled. They see Alabama as they are, not what they were. I think this is where Coach Saban is coming from when talking about a re-set to 2007. Rebuilding the program from the ground up. This will be fun and interesting to watch as NSD 2014 and spring ball give us the first glimpses of the future.

This is what I was doing a poor job of trying to say the other night.
I might have poisoned myself slightly during the OK game.

My initial reaction to Coach Saban's statements about a "reset" were relative to a philosophical change. Maybe even a schematically changing the offense and defense. Those may still be true, but I think a "reset" to building the program is more along the lines of what Coach was getting at. But then again, a historical reference to 1971 can suggest that both may occur. Coach Bryant changed the offense and the culture to get Alabama back on track (though that was after a poor 1969-1970 run).

I was comparing it to recent runs by other top programs that excelled early but then, while still successful, didn't achieve as highly as earlier years. Think post 05 USC.

A lot of our fan base needs to reset also.

I'm excited. This brings us back to ground zero.

We gotta prove ourselves again.
We gotta prove we can win in the new era (playoffs).

Let's do it.

Does anyone think there will be an schematic changes? Other than adjusting to new personnel.

Coach brought CLK in for a reason.
The O and D IMO will be tweaked. There are players who seemed entitled . Maybe they will either learn what team means or GTFO.

He'd have to be joining the staff in some capacity, right?

You think he just schooled Saban while he took notes? (not being a smart arse)

Think post 05 USC

USC was still dominant for several years after the '06 Rose Bowl. Had they beaten UCLA in the last game of the '06 season they would have gone to the BCS Championship Game over Florida. Instead they lost to the Bruins, 13-9. They then went on to beat #3 Michigan in the Rose Bowl by a score of 32-18. This was the same Michigan team that most people believed should have been given the right to play OSU in a rematch in the national title game. '06 USC may have very well been the best team in the country in 2006.

Had USC not lost to unranked Stanford they would have gone to the BCS National Championship Game over LSU in 2007. Instead they crushed Illinois in the Rose Bowl, 49-17.

2008 USC finished the season 12-1 and probably would have gone on to win the national championship had there been a 4-team playoff in '08. That was an incredibly good team with a defense that may even rival 2011 Alabama's.

Yep. The pure talent we have now will win us 10 games a year. It's the 3-4 tough ones where the attitude has to be right. I'm a bit concerned with some of the stories of this past season. And Nick needs to get off the xannies. They work too well.

I cannot remember the name of the "mental Conditioning" coach that CNS has used with Alabama but he and Coach Saban had an interesting conversation over the past couple of weeks. That coach is also the one that started working heavily with FSU this past season. He told CNS that it was time to mentally reset the program. This year the leadership seemed to be pushed by the coaches an only a few of the players rather than pulled by the drive of the players themselves.

The "reset" (over starting over) will be required to get past the entitled mentallity that has set in deeply with the younger players. Those younger players will have to learn they have to fight for the ring rather than just deserve it because they are Alabama. I suspect the softer Saban is no more with the start of the off season program and heading into spring training.

What else will change? I guess we will have to wait and see.

What exactly does a "reset" entail? Processing some players? New coaches?

Dr. Elko?

He was in Paul Finebaum after the Sugar Bowl. He stated that Coach Saban had talked to him about some shifts in philosophy and resetting the program.

I'm hoping the shift in philosophy will include giving Cornwell a chance to start, despite his inexperience. He clearly has loads of upside and a good head on his shoulders. I know LDR is probably the kid who always has his nose in the playbook, but we're trying to win titles, not have good seasons, and with LDR's arm I don't know if we could consistently stretch the field. Obviously his arm isn't a noodle, and we haven't seen him in college action, but I think Saban's gotta go a bit away from the GMAC type (AJ wasn't a GMAC type), and I loved McElroy.

I wouldn't mind seeing Kiffin brought in to be a TE Coach, a rumor I saw Mag talk about on Twitter. Likelihood? Probably not high, but it'd be interesting, and he's a good offensive mind to have on the staff if Saban can control him, plus he's a great recruiter.

Also think we may let the DBs just play more instead of all the load that is on them. VHIII, LSU's Freshmen, they get let loose. Sure there is a system they know and what not, but I think we'll see guys like Eddie Jackson and Tony Brown allowed to just man up on guys more.

I would like to see a change in defense but offensively I am pretty happy with our current set up, I just don't like Nuss' playcalling.

It really is, I think, the most pivotal year, with the most question marks, since this run of excellence started in 2008.

Think about this, and feel free to chime in and correct me and add your own take, but these were the really serious question marks re: personnel that we've had since then...and there haven't been many.

2009: Rookie quarterback
2010: Replacing a decimated defensive secondary that lost seven players from the two deep chart.
2011: Rookie quarterback
2012: Nothing really, beyond replacing Trent, which wasn't that big of a question mark.
2013: Replacing the bulk of the offensive line.

Going into 2014, however...

Rookie quarterback
Replacing the bulk of an offensive line that is already suspect.
Improving a suspect secondary, especially the corners
Improving a very suspect DL, especially a pass rush.

2014 could at the same time provide more excitement and more anxiety than any year in this run, just because, IMO, there are far more critical variables that we have know way of knowing how they are going to play out.

We return almost the whole line...plus Hill and Lindsay who played a lot with the first team.
