Next year we have a ton of exciting position battles. Among the ones that make us the most nervous is the qb battle.

Let's discuss the candidates:

Blake Sims: senior LINK. Saw a lot of garbage time reps.
Strengths: he is mobile.
Weakness: he doesn't have the arm. Struggles with accuracy.

Jacob Coker: transfer. Redshirt junior. LINK
Strengths: live arm and can extend plays with his legs. He is Joe Montana/ Drew Brees with Colin Kapernick's running ability. (Sarcasm in case you can't tell)
Weaknesses: coming off a torn meniscus. Didn't have the greatest reps as a backup. He won't come in until after May, if at all. The fact that so much of our fanbase is depending on him to make an immediate impact tells us all we need to know as far as our confidence in the 2014 quarterback.

Alec Morris: redshirt sophomore. LINK
Strengths: He has a strong arm.
Weaknesses: he has no touch on his passes. He's seen very limited playing time despite the fact that he was eligible for play.

Cooper Bateman: redshirt freshman LINK
Strengths: has the arm and has some mobility in that he can extend plays with his legs.
Weaknesses: Questions about his leadership emerge. Can he relate to the guys that Bama brings in given his upbringing in Utah. Does the game move too fast for him? He didn't face the best competition in Utah.

Parker McLeod: redshirt freshman LINK
Strengths: our staff must have seen something in him that warranted a scholarship and space on our roster.
Weaknesses: He's a ginger. Need I say more?

David Cornwell: freshman LINK
Strengths: live arm. Can extend plays with his feet. seems to have good leadership skills.
Weaknesses: hasn't played much high school football. Is coming off an ACL injury.

I'm one of the few who really don't care about Coker coming to Bama. In this race, I really like what Del Rio has to offer. Plus with the athletes we have at WR(cooper, foster,Jones, black) and Howard we will just need someone who can give them a chance at the ball, nothing spectacular.

Without good online play then none of this even matters. No matter what athletes we have outside, if he doesnt have time to throw it then that point is quite void. Unless we throw quick screens every play, which worked pretty well against the Sooners.

He has a strong arm, just has the control of Rick Ankiel.

Can we take a minute to appreciate just how bad our QB recruiting was under McElwain?

I'm looking at Del Rio to really have the lead at this moment. If Coker comes, then it's down to those guys, then Cornwell.

I think a lot of people here are selling Bateman short.

He talks like a girl version of Trey Parker's character in the Book of Mormon

My guess is the early leader is Del Rio. The competition will be him, Sims and Bateman. I really like Morris but it seems to have passed him by. We might not know for sure until after the first game ala AJ/Sims.

I like DC a lot, but no TF has taken a snap under CNS. If DC is in the top 3 coming out of the Spring, AM, PM and even CB might transfer.

Everything changes if Coker comes, but still don't know if Saban will trust a first year QB. But of he does come, bye bye to at least 2 or 3 QBs.

Going into the spring I think Sims has the early lead. He's been there the longest and waited his turn, and that seems to matter to Saban. He has great mobility, but he has virtually never passed in an actual game. All that said, I don't expect to see him starting against WVU, or even during A-Day. They would have to switch up the offense for him, and quite clearly they aren't willing to do that very often, if ever.

He's going to have to. Coker and Sims are the only guys with a college rep, but both would be considered first year QB's.

Looking back on it, I think this is why you saw our staff take so many backs last year and look for two this year. Saban knew we didn't have a reliable guy to step in after AJ so he loaded up on talented backs knowing that we would be a heavy running team next year. The more you run the more likely a back is to get hurt, so having 6 talented guys could be a lifesaver

If Coker doesn't transfer in...

Sims starts the opener, but Morris or Bateman take over by game three. Del Rio continues to push for the job though.

The offense could resemble what Coach Saban had at LSU in 2004. A senior, career backup starts the season, but is passed by talented young redshirt freshmen by November. Though our guys are far more like Matt Flynn than Jamarcus Russell.

Some guy on BOL is at the BCSCG and posted that Coker is still limping around. That being said, he is able to use his upper body strength to throw 50 yard passes in pregame.
