Calling to establish service with company x and asked for my ssn which is customary. I give it and the person complains it's too many numbers. It took me 7 attempts for them to realize phone number and ssn are different length.
Where do they find these people?

I used to manage at a call center. Yes, stupidity is a requirement for being hired as a customer service rep. Worst job I've ever had.

It's not a requirement, but anybody with a brain can't stand it for more than a day and quits. Process of Elimination = Dumb arse Reps.

I worked for 10 years in a call center for a Fortune 500 supplemental insurance company. I can't tell you how some of the employees made it past the hiring process.
That being said, we put up with tons of dumbass callers as well. For instance, one of the benefits on our accident policy is called an appliance benefit. You qualify for that benefit if you are injured and need an appliance to get around. Examples would be crutches, walking boot, back brace, wheel chair, etc.. I can't tell you how many times I got calls asking how to file for an appliance benefit because they just purchased a refrigerator or dishwasher.
Those type of calls along with being constantly screamed at by customers because we didn't pay their rent "Like dat duck said on the tv" eventually led to me leaving that headache of a job.
