Looks like we've got several players on the way out, saw where UF was losing a bunch, etc.
I don't recall this happening in the 80's. Is this a more recent development?

See the 50's and Bobby Dodd getting him and his lovable losers to leave the SEC because of the 150 rule and Bear Bryant

1973 brought about the first limitations on football scholarships in order to free up money for women's sports after Title IX was passed by Congress in 1972 as part of the Equal Opportunity in Education Act. This caused the NCAA schools' presidents and athletic directors to push through a limit of 105 football scholarships. Additional reductions were made in 1978 (95) and again in 1992 which brought the limit to its present number of 85 and 63 for Division I-AA.

I know it's been going-on since the 50s. Used to be jayvee teams so some players would simply be permanently processed to the jayvee team ... but at the same time you could have 200 people on scholarship back then so the big schools controlled all the talent that way.
When modern day processing began was when scholarship limits were imposed in the 95 range and freshmen became eligible. That was in the seventies if I remember correctly.
Used to be you could tell who was going to be processed if they were not contributing by their Jr season ... or expected to contribute the spring before their junior season.
It's still pretty much that way except these days it's more about their RSo season. If they have not contributed by their third year in the program and they are still RSo ... especially if they are skill players, (not counting QBs) then you can look for them to be reviewed by a staff as a candidate for processing. Now, that doesn't apply to OLmen usually unless they haven't done squat in three years, and it usually doesn't apply to corners.
But it's been going-on in one fashion or another for at least six decades IMHO.
