COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M University officials announced a sincere, long-term commitment to Aggie football head coach Kevin Sumlin Thursday after executing a six-year contract extension for Sumlin following a telephonic meeting of the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents.
The extension will raise Sumlin’s annual compensation to $5 million. Specific language was drafted into the agreement regarding buy-out clauses without cause for both parties. Sumlin’s buy-out obligation to the University extends through the 2016 season, including any post-season contests, requiring restitution in the amount of $5 million dollars to the University. Texas A&M’s buy-out clause runs the length of the contract through December 31, 2019.
Sumlin is 19-6 in two years at Texas A&M and 54-23 in six seasons as a head coach. The No. 20 Aggies are currently preparing for their upcoming match-up with No. 22 Duke in the Chick-fil-A Bowl on Dec. 31.

Yes, the price of doing business has gone up.
Though this year did not rise to the level of our expectations, there is no doubt as to the direction our program is trending.
I for one am glad to have him in Aggieland for the next few years.

I would've liked to see one year with all his recruits first but I don't mind him getting it a little early. Now comes the hard part earning it and I believe he will.

But really, it's about so much more than that. Most vivacious coach we've had in Aggieland in a LONG time, and at the right time in the CFB landscape. We need to give him all the tools and motivation he needs to stay and succeed, IMO.

People can complain we didn't live up to expectations this year but honestly those expectations were because of Kevin Sumlin. Pay the man. And for the first time in my life, the BMAs get it. I mean really get it. The 3-year window with a $5m buyout is perfect.
I think we all know that at some point Sumlin may want to test the waters of the NFL. It's silly to be unreasonable about that long term. But making sure he stays here 5 years first is both practical, because being such an outstanding recruiter it assures we stock the cupboards, and good marketing, so the job is never seen as a stepping stone.
Five years is a reasonable stay. If he leaves after that, it's because he proved something, not because he's the hot name like today. And if he does that and he feels like he wants to try his hand at the next level, by all means, go! I'll never begrudge him if that's what he chooses.

This as long as if he leaves he goes to the league and not another college especially an SEC school that would piss me off

I have always been curious about performance clauses and why they aren't quite a bit grander... Let's say, half a million for winning the SEC West, 1 million for winning the SEC, and 2 million for winning it all.

So it is signed? Like done, done?
I had this nightmare last night of Texas hiring Nick and Bama hiring Sumlin. I look forward to peaceful rest tonight if so.
