The face of college football is changing and that makes these kinds of looks back more interesting for reference.

It used to be major conferences such as the SEC, PAC, SWC etc would often only play 5 or 6 conference games per year and would often play 2-3 serious out of conference opponents from other conferences. Now we're seeing teams playing 8-9 conference games and 0-1 major out of conference opponents per year.

The bowl records are also interesting because you'll notice not all bowl relationships have been as constant as people like to pretend. The Rose Bowl for example advertises their Big 10 vs PAC matchup as a matter of tradition but this ignores the historical participation of other conferences (note Alabama, UGA, Tennessee, Columbia, Duke, Harvard, Penn....)

Yep, so did Auburn ('31), Tulane ('10), Florida (Dec. '12), State (Jan. '12) and So. Miss ('46).

Interesting thing of note is powerhouses such as Norte Dame, Michigan, Ohio State and Nebraska being sub .500 in their bowl history.

Also despite some tough breaks in recent bowls, Oklahoma still retains a 27-17-1 record. Roll Tide!?

Notre Dame had a pretty terrible bowl stretch after Holtz left them.

LSU's first bowl victory was the inaugural Bacardi Bowl in Havana Cuba in 1907.

That's a great story. Interesting to note that the term "spick" is thought to be derived from "no spik Ingles" (or "no spika de Ingles").

This was the last Rose Bowl game played with "at large" teams from outside the Pac-8/Big 10 conferences. These two elite conferences openly admitted restricting the Rose Bowl, because they were tired of getting beaten by teams playing "hillbilly ball". The same reason they cited for not inviting them pre-1920.

In other words, they never took the South seriously, and then once they were forced to, they got tired of Alabama and Tennessee dusting that arse off every year in the "Granddaddy of Them All."

ETA: Just like now, actually. God, but people are sick of the SEC.

Uh you realize the Cap 1 bowl is higher in the SEC bowl hierarchy.. and pays out more than any other non-BCS bowl right? It isn't as old as the Cotton, which I do agree is a major bowl as well, but it was first played in 1947.

Nice try though.

Oh and while we're at it we also have a few Gator Bowl appearances. This was before that bowl game became the 7th or so selection in the SEC pecking order. It's also been around since the '40s and routinely featured top 10 teams, and in some instances even top 5 teams.

Point is, we haven't been to any of the BCS bowls before but if you're going to count the Cotton bowl as a major bowl you better count the Gator and the Cap 1 as well, I think we've been to a combined 5 or 6 times.

You're not trying to reason with kilo, are you?

You do understand why he started this thread and why he presented it, and the Cotton, in the fashion in which he did, do you not?

Not really. UF Football started in 1990, or approximately ten years before LSU took up the sport.

You two dim bulbs are oblivious to the history of the cotton bowl/fiesta in terms of being "major bowls".

Once again you show your arse on the SECr.

Dont like your bowl history? Maybe try harder?

We have never been a great bowl team for whatever reason. Spurrier was only 6-5 at UF. I think it was under Meyer we got above .500 in bowl games, he went 5-1.

Interesting. No major bowl from SC? I didn't perceive them as a very good program historically, but this is still surprising. Looks like Mizzou is definitely on another level as a program.

Why do people list the Fiesta bowl pre 89 as major bowl?

I should narrow this down and include only pre 89 cotton bowls and post 89 fiesta bowls in the name of fairness.

Maybe I will try and update when I get a little more time to compile the needed data, unless someone beats me to it and posts it here. I can then adjust the OP.

You're delusional if you think pre 89 Cotton bowl was a major bowl and the Gator / Tangerine (Cap 1) wasn't.
