Can Saban's 3-4 scheme stop the spread option or will he have to make a fundamental change?

It stopped Tebow did it not?

Scheme wasn't the problem we were getting gashed inside because lack of size at MLB and NG.

just need 2 corners who can cover in man and a disruptive nose tackle. ivory is serviceable but never requires a double team. gotta put the cbs on an island and have everybody else helping on run, and need a NT that can occupy one of the guards as well

I don't believe anyone is going to totally stop Malzahn's offense. Saban just needs to worry about finding a kicker.

Yes. He is out recruiting as we speak.

We had 498 yards before their last drive they had 335, I don't get your irrational argument.

In 2010 Cam & company had 315 yards offense in 2011 Gus had 150 yards total offense.

Me thinks you are FOS with your analysis.

Don't think there need to be a scheme change, a personnel change is more like it. Bama didn't have a great NT this year to swallow up two blocks. Ivory did okay, but he didn't clog up the middle against Auburn. To AU's credit, their offensive line is playing lights out and were seriously underrated coming into the season.

If Bama gets a solid NT and stays disciplined, theres no reason that the scheme doesn't work.

I agree this is part of what Bama (and the rest of us) would need to do.

Regarding some of the other posts:
- No need to discard AU's last possession. It was a one-score game and they were running the ball. AU ran the same base play 38X for 270 yds. Unless Saban's not recruiting well (which isn't the case), it's a scheme issue.
- What makes AU odd is that the previous teams that had success in the SEC running this had Tebow and Newton as QB (among the all-time greats). Whatever Gus is doing he's doing it with ordinary players.

The offense works because of the personnel, mostly the very good OL. The big runs by the QB and end around are much like a play action pass in that it commits the mass of the defense to stopping the run up the middle, then there is a one-on-one matchup (or better) if anyone bites on the fake. They're the same old concepts that make any offense work. Urban Meyer was an offensive genius in 2008, too. He lost a few players and suddenly wasn't quite so smart.

Can't completely stop them. You need a Jesse Williams or Cody at NG. You have to plug the middle or it's a gash party.

It was painfully obvious when Alabama didn't have a behemoth in the middle like Terrance Cody or Jesse Williams clogging up 2 linemen. Even Gus would have had to look to the running left and right against those monsters.

You can't completely stop that offense(or any good offense). But you can limit it enough to win against it consistently. Heck, Bama held their offense to 28 total points, that should have been enough. Unfortunately our special teams and offense decided to play their worst game of the season on the same day. Saban will get his against Gus, you can count on that.

As others have said, the 3-4 is predicated on having a monster at NG that can disrupt the middle of the field and having 2 lock-down corners that can play on an island so the LB's can blitz and attack the run. Our defense this year had neither.

So how's next year looking then? Who can be the next Mount Cody or Tha Monstah?

Funny. I was trying to figure out what Mizzou would have to do if they had to play these guys again (or worse yet, every year), and this was the conclusion I came to.

Luckily for A&M we aren't the target for the revenge game next year.
