quote:

You’ve got to leave the hotel in the middle of the night for a meeting – but the electricity is off. Dressing in darkness, you feel around in your closet. There are eight shoes of four colors, and a pile of thirty-two socks, some coal gray, some stone gray.

What's the fewest combined number of shoes and sock you must take into the hallway to be certain you have a matching pair of socks and a matching pair of shoes?

quote:

Your client, a brilliant accountant, is in a coma. You study her notes trying to solve a discrepancy. Problem is, she did everything by hand, and her writing is horrible. You’re stuck on one line: 101 - 102 = 1. And then it hits you – you just have to move one digit.

What's your move to correctly interpret her notes?

quote:

You’re deposing a deadbeat dad – after tracking him down in a bar. You ask, “How old are your children?” He says, “Well, there are three of them and the product of their ages is 36.” That’s not enough information. He downs another drink and says, “OK, the sum of their ages is exactly the number of beers I’ve had today.” You count the 13 empties. Still not enough info.

"Fine my oldest is old enough to wear contacts." You thank him. How old are the children?

quote:

Three starving scouts are lost in the woods on a team-building exercise. One of them has five California Rolls, the second has three California Rolls. The third has no food, but has eight dollar bills. He offers to pay for his food. They agree to share the eight sushi rolls equally, and Scout #3 will pay all eight dollars for his share of the eight.

Scout #2 (with three California Rolls) suggests he be paid three dollars, with Associate #1 getting five. Scout #1 insists he should get more.

How much should Scout #1 get?

Warning: potential answers below

Good luck.

Interesting. I guess if you don't care if the socks match the shoes then 3 socks would be enough.

1. Five shoes and three socks.

With four potential shoe colors, in the event you manage to pick all four colors with the first four picks, the fifth choice has to match one of the others.

Same on the socks, with only two color choices, if you pick two different colors with the first two picks, the third choice has to match one of the others.

2. No clue.

3. Someone already answered it--ages are 9 and a set of 2-year-old twins. After deposing him, did you beat the crap out of him for being a deadbeat?

4. If they're in California, Scout #1 and Scout #2 should be forced to share with Scout #3, with no payment required. That's the liberal way.

Why would a accountant be squaring a number? I work in accounting and have never squared a number.

The point is to think creatively.

Bingo. And beating the crap out of him is a bonus.

Funny. But there is an actual number.
