First off, congrats to Auburn, and Go War Eagles

Now- I haven't seen a thread on this, so point me to one if it's already established.

We swap away from the BCS after this season to the 4 team playoff. It's already been established that a "committee" will select the four, and not a transparent formula. That basically means, whoever has enough influence can get their horse in the race. While a lot of folks here blindly proclaim "Alabama would be in the playoffs this season", I don't think that's so. You probably have suggestions and money from the SEC, B1G, Pac 12, Big 12, ACC, and very likely Notre Dame, trying to determine the field.

Consider that for a second. I'll go on record as saying the B1G and the Pac 12 will collude, maybe openly. I'll also point out the SEC hasn't made a lot of pals by winning the past 7 titles (with a shot at 8 straight). Now, public perception should keep us in the mix, but we still need a partner.

Is it the ACC? We have some ties, and interconference rivalries with Fla-FSU/Miami, SC-Clemson, UGA-GT. We know the ACC will be close to Notre Dame (since they have a side deal already); do we also get some love there, or does that pre-empt the ACC from helping us?

Is it the Big 12? We know we've entered a deal to meet them in the Sugar/Champion's Bowl, but does the Texas/A&M thing affect that?

Forget about getting 2 teams in; the year we try to do that, we screw ourselves. Remember, there might be years where our team is competing for the last spot in- and if we screw the Big 12 (for example) one year, they will return the favor the next.

Yep. The B1G and PAC-12 have been roadblocks for CFB progress for years...always protecting the Rose Bowl tie-in for those conferences.

Delaney can suck it.

Guys, as a Texas Aggie I live on the border of "Big 12" country, and they fricking LOATHE y'all. And they're the worst BCS conference by far. They're not our allies.

Radikovich was assistant AD at LSU for years and is on the committee. He might give us the nod over the PAC or Big.

Honestly, I don't think there are any allies.

From living on both coasts now, and interacting with a lot of College Football fans, and from observing my facebook feed...they all pretty much hate the SEC. Big 10 and Pac 12 hate is pretty much spot on.

My gut says, a true SEC-blue blood (possibly Big 6) will usually get the benefit of the doubt if on the fringe of a 4-team playoff.

If someone out of the Big 6 in the SEC is on the fringe there will be less conversation about them (i.e. Mizzou this past week, all the talk was on Auburn/tOSU and not also Mizzou/tOSU). Personally, I like a "selection committee" less than I do the BCS formula.

I'd rather see the BCS Top 4 make it into the playoffs. It seems to be more transparent than some committee that selects behind closed doors.

Yea, I think the ACC is as close to an "ally" as we have. But I don't think the SEC needs another conference to stick up for them.

This is pretty much my concern. I get the feeling the Big 12 will be the deciding vote to screw us out of the tourney when it's a logjam. We can't win if we don't get in. And if we don't get in a couple of times, the balance of power shifts away again.

Now, even though the ACC has expanded North, they're still pretty much a Southern conference, and most of their marquee games are matchups vs the SEC East. It would make some sense for them to pair up with us, if we reciprocate. And if they've really managed to pry Notre Dame's allegiance away from the B1G, that helps to create a solid bloc to balance out the old boy network from the Rose Bowl conferences and the Texas/Oklahoma pact.

But- the ACC is still on life support; did you see how empty the stadium was last night? We need for Fla St, VT, Clemson and Miami to recover. Otherwise, we're gonna be going one against all in those back room deals.

Edit to add: of course, if the SEC weakens, the most likely to benefit in recruiting battles would be the ACC. I don't think it's coincidental that Fla has dropped as FSU has risen. Clemson and Ga Tech would benefit a lot if UGA/Auburn/SC are caught in a slide.

We might be caught in a Coup d'état.

Texas ru(i)ns that conference. No one will argue that. They will do whatever they can to marginalize A&M's success, and by extension, the success and exposure of the Southeastern Conference.

only conference that doesn't hate us is maybe the Sunbelt or Gulf South.

The Pac 12 despises our success!

The SEC is an island. We are going to have to play our way in every year without help. The rest of the country hates us. We are going to have to schedule OOC games with the other conference's "powerhouse" teams and beat them to get any love. It's hard enough to get thru our conference without getting beat up but it's gonna get harder if we want to maintain a death grip on the top of college football. Jmo take it or leave it

Not on the field, no; we can handle our business there. But in a smoke-filled room where every vote counts? That's a different animal. And again, we're gonna be going in as the one big boy everyone else wants to cut down to size, so the SEC better make the right deals to cover itself, as best it can.

I agree, but there isn't much we can do to ally ourselves with anyone. The South and thus the SEC is a distinctive cultural entity, and that cohesiveness drives everyone crazy.

Hell, I'm talking about making sure we can stay on the top LEVEL (i.e. always get our champ in), not alone at the top. That much is already done, starting next season.
