Randy Bullock's protector is gone.

Wade Phillips will serve as interim coach for the remainder of the season.

I was hoping that the Texans would at least wait until the end of the season to make this decision. Better to maintain their descent into free-fall mode and secure the first pick in the draft. Worse case scenario, Phillips wins out and the Texans decide that he is the long-term solution as head coach.

Damn, I am shocked Mcnair pulled the trigger in the middle of the season. I didnt even think he would do it until after next season at the earliest.

Sooooooooo do we need a new OC?

As a Cowboys fan, this is the best case scenario

Well, Kubiak was 2011's NFL Coach of the Year. It's hard to ignore that type of success.

It was inevitable.
Kubes is a good guy. Now he can take some time to focus on his health.
Clean house; save Watt & AJ.
And don't lose sight of the word interim where Wade Phillips is concerned.

As a Cowboys/Texans fan, I absolutely hope that Phillip's current position doesn't become a permanent one.

But McNair is seeking a head coach with previous NFL coaching experience. Phillips fits that bill.
quote:

Clean house
That's not going to happen, at least from a roster standpoint.

Here's McNair from today's press conference: "This is not a long-term rebuilding process. I want to make that clear. We’ve got core players who are outstanding players and we still need to fill a few holes. We had some injuries that hurt us in key positions, in terms of leadership on the field. We have some things that we need to do but we’ve still got a good core group of players that can make for an outstanding team.”

Damn, I guess the task of trolling fell to Brent Zwerneman.

The entire article was nothing but a bunch of smoke and mirrors. Sumlin to the Texans would run counter to what the Texans owner had to say in Friday's press conference. Bob McNair, on whether a college coach is a possibility or if he prefers to stick with someone who is currently in the NFL:
quote:

“We would like someone who has had head coaching experience, but has also had NFL experience. It’s a combination of those two things would be the ideal situation and there are people who meet those conditions."

As Agforlife suggested, Lovie Smith would appear to be a better fit for what the Texans are seeking.

He is also not the coach that the Texans need to be looking for, but McNair has his head up his arse like normal. Maybe the person who talked him out of sticking with Kubes for the next year and a half can also talk him out of hiring Lovie and drafting Johnny. Having to play on a rebuilding team would kill his career IMHO.

Lovie is a great fit for the Texans. If McNair drafts Johnny he's dumber than I thought. Johnny will be successful but he's not what the Texans need. Hundley or Murray(if he heals right)wwould be a much better fit. Jmo

Oh there is no doubt he fits as a defensive minded coach, I just think they needed a better, new, and improved version of him.

What about Mett? Nobody is going to convince me that Bridgewater is a solid option. That guy looks like a poor man's version of rg3 and look whats happening to him.

Mett is a good qb but his total lack of mobility scares me. I don't know if it's just a footwork thing that can be fixed or if he just flat can't move. If it's fixable then yeah he's a good choice too.

Now that he has torn his ACL it's even more questionable.

I really like Hundley. Murray wouldn't be bad either. Getting Clowney at 1 then getting one of those guys would be ideal (probably have to move into the late 1st for Hundley if he comes out but Rick never trades up)

I'm really not a fan of any of the potential candidates that have been mentioned so far: Lovie Smith, Ken Whisenhunt, or Mike Shanahan.

I suppose I'm not a huge fan of hiring a NFL retread.

I'd rather gamble on a successful young charismatic college head coach who's been successful in all of his previous coaching endeavors.

Someone like...Kevin Sumlin.

I agree with all this

Yup.

I say McNair goes after David Shaw. I think his style would translate better to the NFL and he wouldn't piss off thousands of Aggie season ticket holders

Mike Zimmer the Bengals DC is the other guy I really like

I just think Lovie would bring a toughness that seems to be lacking in the Texans is all. If it's gonna be a college guy I prefer Shaw. His style translates better. I have nothing against the wide open spreads but the Texans aren't built for that and I don't want to start over

Rumors are spreading quickly on twitter and TA that Sumlin has already been contacted and is setting up a meeting. Just a rumor, don't shoot the messenger.
