Bama Fans: Why Would You Want Kirby Smart to Replace Saban Whenever He Leaves?

I am not saying that Saban is going to leave this year. I have no idea WHEN he will leave, but he will leave/retire one day. So, whenever that day is, why do you want Kirby Smart?
He is a lifelong assistant/coordinator and he coaches in the area of Saban's strength and constant involvement. Do you have any idea if Smart can coach or recruit without Saban around telling him what to do? How do you know that Smart will keep the ball rolling?
Alabama has won 3 out of 4 national championships. Why are you looking forward to an assistant taking over? I just want to hear the reasons.

No one knows the system, the players, the expectations of the job, and everything else better than him. It's a pretty safe, easy hire.

big name coach wont follow a legend if they are smart. Expectations too high. Big name coach will follow the successor if they fail.

He's a defensive mastermind. He's the 2nd best recruiter on the staff (behind Saban himself). He coaches with passion and emotion, much like Saban. The players and recruits seem to love him. He's been raised on the "process" (see Jimbo Fisher).

Just because he knows Saban's system doesn't mean that he can run it, though.
And, he hasn't proven that he can implement anything on his own. Years 1-2 might be okay, but what happens in years 3-5? Or, are you okay with just getting a guy to be a buffer between Saban and the next coach?
But, maybe you are right. You can't really bring in someone to change everything when Saban leaves. That would be a disaster too. I wonder how much success one can expect out of Bama when Saban goes? It really depends on how good Smart actually is, which no one can know because he hasn't been tested.

If they hire Kirby, I'll support him 100%. I would be very hesitant to make that hire. Since Coach Bryant came, we have won national titles with three coaches who had already been head coach at a major program - Bryant (A&M), Stallings (A&M), and Saban (LSU). The worst coach in the modern era was Dubose - a lifelong assistant promoted from Defensive Coordinator.
Forgot to add - of all the other coaches, none of whom won a national title, NONE had head coaching experience in a major program. Fran was from TCU and Curry from Ga Tech, but I wouldn't consider those to be exceptions.

It's a low risk, high reward hire. Jimbo Fisher has done alright for himself.
The only guy on his level is Urban Meyer and he's not coming. There isn't another sure fire slam dunk hire out there. This makes it easy in my opinion to offer Smart in this hypothetical scenario. It would be a hiring a guy that could potentially be the next saban. No one knows his methods and shares his ideology like Kirby

Jimbo is as much a Terry Bowden disciple as he is a saban disciple. If you want to use a saban disciple as a reference, BOOM is a much better example.

Remember that Saban recommended Houston Nutt to take his place at LSU to keep things moving in the right direction. Maybe he knew then that he wanted to come back to the SEC in a few years and he wanted LSU destroyed before he got here? Who knows.
At any rate, Jimbo Fisher served under Les Miles and Bobby Bowden AFTER Saban left. He also coached offense, proving his capability to formulate and develop his own system.
He was basically the functioning coach at FSU while Bowden was still there. If problems had been detected, they would have gone another way. AND, it has taken him several years to get FSU back up and running.
I am not saying that Smart can't be really successful. Maybe he can. It just seems like a big shiip to give a guy without any experience.

I'd be fine with Kirby as HC. The transition would be smooth as shite. And if he's successful, he's young enough that we could be in good shape for 10-15 years.

Always assumed that's why he's often rumored in connection to---but obviously has not taken---other OC jobs in recent years.

Whenever I see "well he knows Saban's system," the first person I think of is Paul Petrino.
We sucked last year for several reasons, not the least of which was the fact that you can't take the key cog in the wheel out (Saban/Bobby) and just expect to replicate those results.
Saban is a borderline sociopath. Bobby Petrino is a top notch a-hole. Working under them doesn't mean their successors/assistants are cut from the same cloth.

Kirby Smart isn't the real DC no more than Muschamp was while they were at LSU.

Because he has been groomed by Saban, he calls the defense, he knows the expectations, he is familiar with the program, he recruits at a similar level, etc.
He's young enough that IF he were to be a success he could stay for a loooooooooooong time and keep us going at a high level.

I don't. I want a proven head coach. Now if Kirby left first, and did well elsewhere as a head coach, maybe.
