Alabama Coach Nick Saban’s Folly: Great Coaches Protect Their Players

Sorry if Germans but I thought you should read this.

This is a game played by kids not long out of high school, and while some suit up for the chance to get rich, most play for sheer love of the sport. Because they dazzle us with acts of extraordinary athleticism and, yes, courage, we tend to forget that under their helmets and pads, these players are just as vulnerable and needing of support as any other college kids. Indeed, given the pressures placed upon them and the intensity of the spotlight, these young athletes need more support.
It’s understandable that all this may be lost on fans given the excitement of the moment. But for a coach to forget how much his players need his support in moments of defeat is just unforgivable.
For the Alabama players, Saturday’s game was a searing experience. It was so bad, their senior kicker received death threats. This was the time for an icon like Alabama coach Nick Saban to focus his postgame remarks on helping the players he supposedly loves. Saban should have had one goal in mind: Protect his players.
Instead, he gave passing reference to “taking responsibility” then piled on, reeling off a litany of mistakes that could have won the game.
quote:
It doesn’t have to be this way. Coaches like Auburn’s Gus Malzahn, Ole Miss’s Hugh Freeze, Vanderbilt’s James Franklin, and LSU’s Les Miles make you want to love the sport because they love the sport. They are open and visible about their love for their players. In October, after heavily favored LSU lost to Ole Miss and his star quarterback had one of the worst nights of his career, Les Miles took all the blame, saying in classic Miles style, “I did a piss poor job preparing this football team to play in this game.”

Didn't he just throw his QB under the bus?

Not a single "kid" played in that game. 18 is the end of "kid" talk. This is one of my biggest pet peaves.

It's true that Nick's ego won't allow him to admit he fricked up. He's got a long track record of putting the blame on the players when they make mistakes. Not saying it's wrong....obviously it works for him and the frontrunning little shits keep lining up to play for him.

What the frick was he supposed to do? Say "its my fault" over and over through a 10 minute presser?
This is the stupidest shite that people are harping on from this game.

He could have come out and said something to support Cade Foster. He did nothing and said nothing, leaving him there to twist....

Support a guy who continuously screwed up in a game with national championship implications? I do not blame Cade Foster at all for the loss to Auburn on Saturday, but this new phase that we're going through where we consistently have to come out in support of mediocrity, just to have a guy save face, is disgraceful and, quite frankly, un-American.

So what was he supposed to say? Sugar coat it? What good would that have done?

USA, USA, USA!
Seriously, Cade Foster screwed up, but a lot of other people screwed up, too - that's why it was up to the kicker. Had TJ cut left instead of right, had Cyrus Jones not bit on the rb, had nussy not made some boneheaded predictable play calls, CF wouldn't have been called on to screw up.
If my aunt had a dick, she'd be my tranny uncle who lives with gramma and can't get a job.

LOL. This is code for "ok....these guys report to me, but they screwed up!" This phrase is so overplayed in sports and especially business.

someone needs to post the video of Les Miles press conference after Arky game as a reference to how a coach should talk about his players

....and we'll keep beating the LSUs, Floridas, and Auburns the great majority of the time, and come early in the 2015 season in Dallas, Tx., we'll curb-stomp Wisconson's slow, bloated inferior asses.....and life will continue on.

It might continue to go on, but won't be with Saban as your coach.

Clearly Bama should fire him for this.
A&M may let him be our DC in the meantime.

Yes and also called his players out publicly as well. Is their a time to do this, maybe so. I could see certain times where it could be a motivational tool. But not when your team just choked with a championship on the line. Losing in the most gut wrenching fashion in the most incredible way in football history. The worst part was not coming out in support of cade Foster. Is he a great coach? no doubt, but he is also a miserable person.
